Resolved Question

Windows 10 has to be restarted after powering up

Mar 30, 2017 7:04AM PDT

Recently when I powerup my Windows 10 computer it stops at a blank login screen. There is nothing on the screen but the buttons at the bottom right corner. I always have to restart with one of those buttons and then Windows will load all the way to the desktop. I do not have it set to prompt for a username/password and can't figure out why it's stopping at this blank screen.

Thanks,

- Does this happen also if you hibernate in stead of shutting down? Might make a difference, and if it does it's a nice work-around.
- Is Fast startup enabled? If it is, disable it and try again.

Since you mentioned the url of a company in your post, I assume it's a work-related PC. Then have it solved by the IT-staff.

hibernate

Tried hibernate and got same result, except this time I had to restart with my programs still running.

Fast startup? can't find that setting.

It's a work PC, but no IT staff.

Thanks

You can't find it, but google can: https://www.google.com/search?q=windows+10+fast+startup
So you can find it, if you can find google. Knowing where to look really helps finding things.

- What changed since it last worked correctly?
- Did you allow Windows Update to install new drivers? That's one of the first settings the IT staff (if present) should have turned off.
- Can you go back to before "recently" via System Restore or a recent image backup?
- Do you loss a lot if you go back to factory conditions (if allowed by the companies rules). Or do you store data on your local c:-drive in stead of on the companies server?
- Did you ask your boss for a new PC or to have it repaired since this one sucks?

Sorry for not Googling it myself. Disabling Fast Startup allowed me to boot directly into Windows without having to restart. I think I'll have to let it sit longer than 30 seconds to be sure because I've rebooted during the day before and didn't have this issue.

For completeness, this started after a large Windows Update was installed. Not sure if any drivers were installed by Windows Update, but that is probably allowed. I'll look into disabling that.

Thank you very much for your help.
