Question

Windows 10 has killed my lap top?

Aug 15, 2015 11:37AM PDT

I had an alert and downloaded Windows 10. When it loaded there no Start menu.

A lot of forums suggested opening powershell in admin and inserting Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}.

That didn't work so I tried another tip from the MS forum whereby you go into the Registry Editor and insert:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ ImmersiveShell\Launcher Click Edit > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it UseExperience. Double-click the newly created item and set the value to 0.

Since then my laptop refuses to start-up at all, it says it is diagnosing the problem and then goes to automatic repair. Reset the PC doesn't work, system restore doesn't work, system image recovery doesn't work, check disk in the command prompt bit doesn't work.

I also tried...
bootrec /fixMBR
bootrec /Fixboot
bootrec /rebuildBCD

I'm at my wit's end - is my laptop dead?? Any tips/suggestions?? everything was fine before I tried to install the new windows, now I have a completely non-functioning laptop.

Download and burn the Windows 10 .iso file, boot from it, and use the option to go back to Windows 7 or 8 or 8.1 (you didn't tell where you came from, so I mention all possibilities).

Thanks for the answer - I can't download anything - I can't get to a start screen, let alone online, I can't get past the Auto Repair loop and EVERY option from there won't work. It's super frustrating. (I came from 8.1). The computer also doesn't have a disc drive.

We haven't fully discovered why it did that but the client did not take any advice over the usual items. They plowed ahead without unplugging USB drives and printers, didn't uninstall the antivirus/firewalls and changed from a password protected login to Microsoft's new email login.

I see Kees mentioned what we did next AFTER we cloned the HDD to safeguard files.

Just cloned the drive to safeguard files then did what Kees wrote. Can be harrowing for some, some can't do it as they don't have a spare PC to create the DVD.

What is this about no disk drive?

Is this the old missing ODD? (optical disc drive.)

Those run under 30 bucks for USB DVDRW drives and soon I'll have 2 of those and a firesale on a USB BluRay burner had me pull the trigger at 55 bucks.

Anyhow, the Microsoft Windows 10 media creation tool lets you create the Windows 10 install media on USB.

-> All that aside, there are failures/issues that can only be solved with other boot devices. It sounds like you are new to recovery so ask more questions if need be.
