Question

windows 10 firewall not working with proton VPN enabled

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen , I really need your help in this issue. I have windows 10 1903, and proton VPN latest version installed. My problem is that whenever the VPN is active, windows 10 firewall rules not working. So, if I blocked A program from Internet, it is blocked only with normal connection not when the VPN is ON, just after VPN connection established the Program will connect as it has no rule at all or like the firewall is OFF. Also another thing, do not know if it will matter, but MS Office also has some problems with VPN, whenever VPN is active, office can not connect to the internet, word, excel, etc. It tells me there is no connection. I tried a lot of solutions I read online, but with no help.

The latest W10 update does break some VPNs.

Back to Proton for their fixes as I don't know that one and it would be rare for members to also know this one but what I do know is the latest W10 broke some VPNs. Lucky you.

Yup, lucky me

Lesson learned, never install any update till it's 6 months old

W10 forces updates (well discussed.

Not yet at least. Try the update Grif notes then back to Proton.

Answer
Have You Installed Today's Patch Tuesday Update For Win10?

If you haven't, there are a number of fixes included in the update. The latest update is at the link below:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4507453/windows-10-update-kb4507453

If you read the "Know Issues in this Update" section, you'll see a Workaround section for the VPN problem mentioned. It's for "Always ON VPN" setups so it may not apply here, but it's worth a look.

There have also been some problems with Office 365 which have been fixed in the previous update and are now included in this one. It's worth a try.

Hope this helps.
