Windows 10 April 2018 Update Is Now Available

Apr 30, 2018 1:21PM PDT

Microsoft has released its April update for people to manually download today, before it’s more broadly rolled out to machines on May 8th. Per my previous post, where I referred to THIS ARTICLE,, I visited the Microsoft Media Creation Tool Website and downloaded the ISO for the latest version of Windows 10 Version 1803 build 17134.

At this point, I've downloaded the ISO to a folder on the desktop computer, burned the image to a DVD, and installed it and so far, so good. Since I've had a few issues with CHKDSK on previous update versions, I'll run that next and let you know how it goes. I've got another laptop which I'll test tomorrow after running the desktop through a few tests.

Hope this helps.

Found Some Interesting Problems Here During Routine Tests
May 1, 2018 8:54AM PDT

Although everything here seems to be running smooth, I did notice that a number of settings were taken back to default. ("Settings" issues was one of the items for which the Spring/April 2018 updates was delayed.) For example, even though this machine previously had Windows Defender operating with no other AV installed, WD was disabled in Group Policy settings and I needed to re-enable it.

I also previously had "Do you want to automatically download manufacturer apps and custom icons, etc" (Automatic Update of Drivers) disabled in Control Panel-System-Hardware tab-Device Installation Settings. I needed to re-disable this option by selecting "No" again and saving those changes.

I also had disabled "Turn on Fast Startup" in Power Options and I UNCHECKED that box as well.

So, it would be a good idea for all to check all their personalized settings after updating to the latest build.

I found a little issue with System Protection
May 1, 2018 8:59AM PDT

I went to Create a Restore point on my D drive and found System protection was disabled on C and D drives .
I had to re-enable them and than created the restore point.

I Updated A Second Computer, A Laptop, & Had Similar Results
May 1, 2018 6:11PM PDT

On this computer, I placed the Windows.iso in a folder, mounted the ISO volume and ran "setup.exe" from inside the ISO. Before running the install, I uninstalled the third party antivirus and the update went smoothly.

Unfortunately, like before on the desktop, similar settings and System Restore changes were noted and I had to re-set them. Also, because the two test machines were on the same workgroup/network I made sure to check the sharing between both machines. The Windows 10 April 2018 update had changed some of the settings and I dinked around with both machines for quite a while till I got them back to "Private networks" with all sharing and discovery working.

Hope this helps.

Two of my machines updated themselves today
May 1, 2018 10:44PM PDT

Apparently the update is being rolled out to some computers before May 8th. FWIW, I had two of mine upgrade themselves today (a Lenovo x131e Netbook and an MSI 970A-G43, AMD FX-4300 equipped home built). The update was titled (as you'd expect) "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803."

All has seemed to go OK with the exception that my Adobe PhotoDeluxe 4.1, which is an XP-era program, no longer will start.

Interesting, Please Tell Us Which "Winver" You're Seeing
May 2, 2018 11:28AM PDT

In the Search window in the lower right of your desktop, type "winver" (without the quotes) and press the "Enter" key when you see the winver run command listed at the top. If you've actually updated to the newest version of Windows 10, you should see Version 1803 build 17134.1. If the update you received is for the previous version of Windows 10, it should say something like Version 1709 build 16299.xxx.

So far, the full release of Version 1803 wasn't supposed to take place till Tuesday, next week. But who knows, maybe MS is getting itchy feet. I did find the article below indicating a few folks HAVE been updated when they pressed the "Check for Updates" button in Windows Updates.

Thanks.

Others Are Having Problems Also
May 3, 2018 10:49AM PDT

Have you unplugged all USB devices? If not, I would.

Read the articles in the links below which provide some insight and fixes for a few of the various problems being found:

https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-april-2018-update-problems-microsoft-working-on-fix-for-chrome-issues/

https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-april-2018-update-common-problems-and-fixes

https://www.techradar.com/news/windows-10-april-2018-update-is-causing-issues-in-chrome-and-microsoft-is-now-working-on-its-successor

One of the things I've found helpful is to do a lot of pre-install work before updating/upgrading with these major updates. I make sure the BIOS is current, as well as all device drivers. I also make sure to remove all USB devices, and that includes USB mice/keyboards, then I temporarily uninstall any third party antivirus programs, then I delete all junk and temp files, then I run CHKDSK /f /r /x on the drive where Windows will be installed, then I run a disk defrag to make sure things are as clean as they can be.

Hope this helps.

How many feel windows 10 has been LESS problematic or MORE problematic than earlier versions of windows? From what I've seen in the forums, I get the feeling it's been MORE.

Two dead machines due to MS 2018 Spring Update.
May 4, 2018 5:20PM PDT

Have three Dell machines, 64-bit and all updated to Spring Version fine--for two days. Then two machines would not re-boot, would not allow a re-set, would not allow a restore. Spent two days fiddling with Flash drive installations to no avail. Neither machine will boot past Dell Splash page and simply spin while apparently searching for boot section. One machine in shop; workers could not repair. Tried to reinstall Win 10 Pro and same problem--could not boot into Windows. My question is this: If MS does issue a fix by 8 May, how will we get it into our machines? Seemingly a very bad update!
Best Regards, Lew Marquardt

download a live linux distro ISO
May 5, 2018 11:33AM PDT

and "burn image" to a DVD. Boot to it from the DVD drive and it will have a file manager that will allow you to access the drive and backup your personal files first before you lose them all. I suggest Mint, Ubuntu MATE, or Elementary OS distros. If you don't know how to "burn image" to create a bootable DVD, you can get one for $6 from osdisc.com site, a large clearinghouse for linux distros.
Then,if you have windows 10 installation or boot media, use that to see if you can restore the windows boot system.

Dell Has Recovery Disks. Have You Used Them?
May 5, 2018 1:27PM PDT

Unfortunately, you've not told us anything about those computers. Yes, they're Dell's but laptop or desktop. Model number? Did they all have the previous Windows version 1709 installed when they updated? Were there USB devices plugged in when the updates occurred? Did you update them yourself manually or did they automatically update from Windows Update? WHY couldn't the workers repair the machine in the shop?

Basically, using the Recovery Disks involves reinstalling Windows and all programs, drivers, etc. back to the computer's factory state. If that can't be done or Windows can't be installed because the machine doesn't work, then there's usually something wrong with the hardware, not Windows.

Hope this helps and let us know more.

Thanks for the replies! (I do not have Dell Recovery disks.) On Dell Inspiron 5570 with all up-to-date drivers and latest BIOS installed, Windows 10 Pro, Version 1709 runs fine with all my preferred software. Have finally been able to install Win 10 Pro 1803, which also runs fine WITHOUT Corel WP X8. After installing WP X8, Windows 10 1803 will not boot past the Dell splash sign. After removal of WP X8 and restoring 1803, all seems again to be fine. However, WP X8 runs fine on another Dell desktop (XPS 2710) under Windows 10 Pro 1803. Is it Windows, or is it WP X8?
Many Thanks, Lew Marquardt

Well, Since Windows 10 V1803 Runs Fine Without Corel...
May 8, 2018 7:37PM PDT

. and that would include with all the basic drivers and programs you already have installed, I'll say it's a problem with Word Perfect X8, specially since one of your other machines runs it fine. One way or another, there's obviously a conflict somewhere. You might want to check with Corel to see if there are any patches that need to be installed PLUS check on the problem machine to make sure the BIOS, and all software drivers are up to date. The graphics driver comes to mind.

Hope this helps.

Windows 10 update
May 11, 2018 6:04PM PDT

Hi
Like a lot of other readers I to am having a problem downloading the new updated OS.
My desktop downloads but stops installing at about 92% because deep freeze is not compatible.
Fine but I can't find deep freeze to update it to a compatible version.
My computer also freezes when loading Chrome however turning off the computer and restarting it will makes it run fine all be it with a message to say it was not turned off correctly. .
Only one of my 4 Windows 10 machines did an automatic update. Don't know if the others need to be manually updated or not.

Windows 10 new update

I think the new update is not up to mark and it's more complex than the previous updates. Older updates are better than the latest one in my opinion.
