Question

Windows 10 and MS Mail & People & Edge

Aug 14, 2018 2:31PM PDT

I am helping a friend that has problems with MS Mail and People. She can receive email but cannot type in anything in MS Mail. Also all her People contacts have changed to only showing phone numbers and not email addresses.
Tried to open Edge but cannot type in anythibg. Chrome is default and it is working fine. Some time ago my friendsaid her home had a power outage, but she couldn't remember if the Mail problem was occurring before the outage or not.
When I got there, she had 10 MS updates not installed. In installed all of them and rebooted but nothing changes.
I hoping someone can give me a couple of suggestions on where to look and what I should update.

Answer
When mail won't send.

You are checking the settings of the mail app. It's not something I can tell you the settings since it changes with your mail service. Always have to ask them for the settings.

W10 does have a reset and save files but given we have Chrome, Thunderbird and so many alternatives I'd just use what works. Microsoft has a very poor track record on their free email apps.

I'd get away from all those. I, like others here use Firefox with Gmail (free), and don't have problems with mail. You might get to import mail from MS mail.

Sorry. Apart from Win 10.

Keyboard not active during MS Mail
Aug 15, 2018 10:52AM PDT

I cannot type in anything including who the email address. Nothing!
I had Chrome as default browser. When I set Edge as default, both external links didn't work until I switched back to Chrome.

MS Mail Locks Out Keyboard
Aug 20, 2018 10:35AM PDT

You missed my actual problems.
(1) The keyboard gets locked out when I try to reply or forward a MS Mail message.
(2) The People app changed to only showing phone numbers, all the email address disapeared.
(3) With Chrome as default browser, external shortcuts work. After I changed to Edge as default, they do not go anywhere. Changed back to Chrome default and every one works again.

I'm looking for suggestions as this has me going crazy.

My bet is you'll be asking Microsoft how to fix.

It's a very strange issue but the usual advice is to stay away from Microsoft's mail and contact apps. Microsoft's track record on these is spotty to terrible. That is, I've lost count of folk that get all their information put in and Microsoft does some update and data is lost. Microsoft and others can remind you over and over about backups but my choice is to use other apps.

All that aside I did encounter a troublesome machine like above. It had a trojan but that's not all. Their choice of security apps blocked a lot of app functionality. So what a mess. We cleaned up the infection, but they didn't want to change security software. Answer: New apps for mail and contacts.
