I see Microsoft sells it on USB today.

Many of those drive less models put off you buying the external drive. I see Walmart has USB DVDRW drives for about 25 bucks so that's where many get those if they need a drive. The big upside to this is that it can be used on many computers.

Windows 10 on USB can be downloaded from the web but the instructions change over time. Use this phrase to find current instructions.

Am I right?

Am I right in thinking if I plug in the USB or buy a external drive, Windows will automatically install onto the laptop?

Sadly no.

Microsoft and makers have yet to devise such a nice system.

Google "How to install Windows 10 from USB" to find your choice of a tutorial.

No problem for most versions of Windows. Which one do you want to install?

Alternatives:
- external DVD-drive
- order the recovery media from the laptop maker.

We recommend the last, because it contains all you need and is easy to do. Installing a new Windows means a hunt for the right drivers and other software that came with the laptop.
