window xp messed up my window 7

Jun 8, 2010 11:17PM PDT

so my laptop had vista when i bought it and when window 7 came out i got an upgrade disk from toshiba, so it's legit. everything was going well until my cousin installed bootlegged window xp pro sp3 version 2002 in disk d which i never used to accomodate a program that couldn't work on win 7. Now i want to remove window xp and use window 7 again but it's the most impossible thing. my cousin deleted window xp but couldn't boot into win 7. then my friend was doing stuff with boot.ini but that didn't work either. he said that my window 7 installed wrong or corrupt. so what am i suppose to do?

Completely format your hdd and than install windows xp and do an upgrade to 7 if you have and upgrade dvd from toshiba or else do a clean isntall. 7 uses bcd insted of boot.ini along with bootmgr.

Bad advice.

That bootlegged XP is altered so you can't be sure of the results.

Also Toshiba here in the US only gives you restore media so no dual boot without some cash outlay for XP and 7.

The costs mount fast.

the upgrade disk is from vista to 7, not xp to 7.

Which is going to be trouble.

Let's see what we have in this brew.

1. Vista recovery media (we hope!)
2. 7 Upgrade.
3. Bootleg XP.

A recipe for pain. No one could make a prediction what would happen.

Even if we had the proper XP SP3 CD we still have an issue the 7 DVD is not a full version. To be sure of the results we'll want the full version of 7 and XP.

Hope this is clearer.

I'm planning to move some of the important things such as pictures and documents to my usb and then just delete the whole computer. Then I'll install vista and use my upgrade disk to upgrade to 7. Will that work?

It should.

Just last month my brother returned a loaner laptop and it was such a mess. I gave it a hour to clean up but then I thought "nothing here I want" and used the recovery media.

The only annoying part of that was the day of Microsoft updates. For you might be able to skip that by using the recovery media and not let it onto the web until the Windows 7 is installed.
