window vista hangs on welcome screen

I need help, my windows vista hangs on welcome screen then goes to black screen.If I start up in safe mode the computer shuts off when trying to access a program.
Last night i got it to load once and accessed my my system showed windows product key could not be recognized???

It seems time for a fresh install. Find your recovery disks and go ahead.

avast may be what is causing issue. aswrvt.sys file. found someone with same issue that was using avast.

Sounds like a reload as something else.

The shutoff can be a lack of maintenence or failed fan/other hardware failure. Reloading the machine is a good way to sniff out if there's hardware issues. But if you ask the owner if they used canned air and they reply with What is canned air, you know it's due.

windows hangs at welcome screen. If left at that screen it eventually goes to black screen with mouse pointer. Tried to bring up task manager but nothing comes up.
when I load in safe mode with networking it loads files up to aswrvt file then hangs then boots into safe mode but no icons nor start button will work.
computer then shuts off

aswrvt is not part of Windows.

That means to me the reload was not done so you can't tell if it's hardware, software or the old non-maintenance issue.
