Window ME upgrade

Dec 11, 2003 10:54AM PST

I want to upgrade to Windows XP home and am now running ME. I have a compaq 733 with 128 ram. It came preloaded with ME and I have no ME CD. XP wants proof of my using ME to upgrade. How can I provide proof?
I have no registration number.

With no CD or registration number, you've been ripped off?

Without the CD what happens when the hard disk contents vanish?

In short, we can go round and round, but the bottom line is that there is no proof here you have a license for Windows ME. Don't get upset, but do contact the seller of the machine if they sold you such a license?

If not, you'll need the full XP license version...

BUT WAIT!!!

Withe just 128 Meg of RAM, you may be less than thrilled with XP. I would hold out on this update until the RAM is doubled and you sort out whether you can obtain your CD or if you have to get a full license.

If you have the Compaq restore CD it may suffice as proof of previous purchase. Seems like I used my 98SE disk instead, so I may be wrong here. Bob is right about the memeory. All the makers will sell an XP machine with 128 Ram, and shame on them. I had 256 when I updated and now have 512. That's all you need for most apps and your PC should be fast enough to run XP OK.
