Win98 startup issue after installing CA Internet Security 07

Jul 5, 2007 2:03AM PDT

I was using McAfee as anti-virus, which I uninstalled, then installed CA IS 2007. It will start in safe mode but will not under normal mode, stopping at the point where the icons begin to appear on the desktop. I've rebooted several times to no avail. I see several "blue windows" of error messages during the boot process.

I also cannot access any internet sites, getting the familiar "cannot find" the site type error message on the browser.

CA did run a scan and found a trojan called Emusaffil A and a "home page hijack" called xupiter.orbitexplorer, and Kazaa. However, I noticed that for some reason the anti-virus did not install (it comes with the suite).

I left the computer disconnected from the DSL line this morning, don't know if that was a wise thing to do, but it seems to be only semi-protected now and I didn't want to risk especially since the computer is not usable now (unless in safe mode).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: CA IS

http://home3.ca.com/Support/AppDocs/SS/Upgradeto_eISSr3.aspx?sc_lang=en-US indeed says it runs with Windows 98. But somehow not with you. Maybe parts of McAfee still interfere (sometimes difficult to uninstall completely).

I'd start with uninstalling it, reinstall McAfee and see if everything is fine again. Then start thinking if you really want this suite or prefer to return it (you've got a good reason to do so). The review in http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2020899,00.asp isn't too positive moreover.

If you want to keep it, better go to the Virus and Security forum and ask for advise on removing McAfee, and if they know of issues between CA Suite 2007 and Windows 98.
If you still can't get it working, there are many alternatives.

Hope this helps.

Just an opinion.

I use w98.
I used CA AV for yrs....worked fine.
Then they went to ver 2007.

It did not work so fine.
Perhaps just a matter of another util slowly backing away
from support for this old OS.

Anyway I dumped the thing and loaded a copy of free AVG.
So far AVG seems to work well with no fuss.

Maybe.

As I recall.

When I downloaded CA AV 2007 the download page at CA had a special link
for W98.

Unless you read the fine print the link isn't exactly obvious.

Did the CA suite d/l page have such a link?

Thanks to everyone, problem resolved!

I uninstalled CA 2007 (I had the boxed set) and it booted right up.

Bob: The package said it was 98 compatible, I think that's why I ended up with CA's suite vs. the others.

Thanks again, I really appreciate everyone's time and effort.

Best regards,

Mike
