Re: windows 98 hanging.
Jul 25, 2007 6:45AM PDT

The secret could be that Windows 98 only supports up to 512 Mb. Remove half of the memory and see if that works.

Once it works, you can go into the General Tab of msconfig and use that to limit the memory to 512 Mb. Then - of you like - you can put in the other 512 Mb so you won't lose it. But it won't be functional at all.

Are you sure you can get drivers for Windows 98 for all the features offered by this mobo: http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=k8n_neo2_platinum

Hopet his helps.

windows 98 hanging
Jul 25, 2007 8:56AM PDT

Thanks Kees,
After your reply I checked the mobo on the msi site and found that due to the limitations of the nforce chip the mobo cannot work with win98 or me, your answer concerning the amount of ram I had, is taken on board, I have an old asrock mobo, I'll try my project on that. i'll post my results no matter what!
the systems I have running are:
win3.1
win95
winxp pro (32)
win vista ultimate (32)
they all run, so I thought I would try and get win98 se running.

Possible RAM Drive with extra memory
Jul 27, 2007 10:01PM PDT

Probably have to get advice from Kees on this....

...but, after 98 is up and running, it may be possible to use any extra RAM as a RAM Drive so, after boot-up, you can store stuff (possibly games) in there for ultra high speed access.

Never had the memory to try this myself so can you advise us Kees ?

(NT) I don't think it will work, but it's worth a try.

RAM Drive on 98se
Jul 28, 2007 9:07AM PDT

There are several programs out there, costing about $25, for several different OS's, including 98 - THIS ONE can emulate 1.44 & 2.88 Floppy drives as well as a HDD.

There is an INTERESTING ARTICLE here that tells you how to go about it without a third party program.

Near the bottom of THIS ARTICLE you can see the Ramdrive.sys parameters. Looks like you won't get more than 32Megs.

PLEASE message me if anyone gets it going OK. I need some more real RAM before I can try it.

Mike

Just to let you know...

Windows 98 and 95 cant run on the same computer. They cancel each other out.

Also, Kees, dont know if you knew this or not, but you can easily run Windows 9x on more than 512Megabytes of RAM by altering System.INI. Use Google, for that info, kids.

Says, Kees, for a Sysadmin, you don't know too much do ya..?

Thanks for the correction.

Yes..

Yes but once you have removed the extra, you can alter System.INI to accommodate AND USE as much RAM as you'd like. Just cos Microsoft is finickity about bending the rules a bit doesnt mean its impossible. I don't run Windows 9x on modern hardware for no reason..

Win98 Freezes on starting for first time after clean install

I had the same problem. Solved by adding Device = C:\windows\Himem.sys and Device = C:\windows\emm386.exe to config.sys file

Good Luck
