Don't spare the details since some of those laptops required the exact driver for this to work.
I found an old laptop today runnning WIN98. It had a removable floppy drive installed and a seperate CDROM drive that was unconnected. I removed the floppy drive and connected the CDROM drive. I attempted to boot with a Linux boot disk, but strangely it did not boot in Linux, and instead booted in WIN98. I inserted another CD into the drive and attempted to run it. Upon inserting a disk, it spins about a quarter of a rotation, then stops. When I try to access the drive from my computer, it tells me that the "device is not ready." Where could I find a driver for the CDROM drive that I could put on a floppy and transfer to my laptop?
