Question

Win7Explorer thumbnails without repeated creation.

Oct 29, 2016 12:44AM PDT

I have numbers of image files on the disk, need to see their content quickly in Explorer, without opening it.
Once created a database when entering a folder on re-entry, then opens quickly, os it has in cache. Until the restart, when once displayed thumbnails are creating again and slowly. Is there a way to set that still does not create a new database? Or is it not erased but the access is slow? I have a fast SSD, it should be faster anyway.
Thanks for any advice on how to speed it up.
Peter

Without seeing what you're doing, it's hard to say

but the usual method is to open the folders containing the images, right click on a blank area, and select the option to show thumbnails. You can also show them as small, medium and large. Now, if you do regular disk cleanups, one of the options is to remove those thumbnails. If you allow that to happen, you'll have to rebuild them.

JPG, PDF and other thumbnails

Of course, disc cleaning that I am doing regularly means getting rid of similar files. But this happens after every reboot. Thumbnails are of medium size

You added that this happens upon reboot

I presume that, within a session, you can go in and out of the folder and all is OK. I'd ask if the disk upon which the images are stored is your primary or other fixed drive or a removable. For any on a removable drive, this would be normal. Another question that could be asked is has this always happened or has something changed. Your version of Window 7 might also be important to know as it's possible through the group policy feature to enable/disable caching of thumbnails. I also read that some overly protective AV programs can affect the behaviors of certain file types that it thinks are vulnerable to exploit. You might want to offer more details about your PC, the version of Windows 7 you are using, and what kind of system protection you have installed.

yes, Steven, it seems smth of these reasons can do this problem. JPGs or PDFs or other such files are on an external USB3 drive, some on primary SSD. It may indeed be crucial. It happens after every reboot not only in case of change. I have a Windows PC 7_64 ultimate version with 8 GB RAM AV ESET Smart Security v8. Important is probably the setting behavior of the thumbnails at all. thx for all advices gentlemen Wink

A few thoughts.

1. These views in Windows Explorer (I don't know a Win7Explorer app) are cached but there are reasons this can go away. I'd also boost MRUBAG. Read item 2 before increasing MRUBAGS.

2. A client was using a cleaning app. It was cleaning out the cache files. They had a rough go at stopping use of the crapware.

3. External drives tax this speed. No fix other than "don't do that."

4. Dropping thousands of files in a folder has done this since forever. I saw folder speed effects since UNIX's early days. Try 1980 or prior! It was well known this was a speed hit so we keep folders that must be fast under a few hundred entries.

OK, more about MRUBAGS. Read http://www.jeroentielen.nl/explaining-the-bagsbagmru-registry-tree-trying/
