Win7 users PCs crash from KB update

May 5, 2016 12:34PM PDT

It appears that Win7 users having done the install of KB3133977 will cause non-booting or crashes. Depending on how you word it, the PCs based on an ASUS mtrbd. will be at the core of the problem due to the KB# being installed. The UEFI status is changed or becomes active for "secure boot" that the update will turn-ON or similar. In other words if you have Win7, Asus mtrbd., UEFI active(secure boot) in bios and install the KB#, you will be hosed.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/3065487/microsoft-windows/recommended-kb-3133977-patch-can-cause-asus-pcs-to-freeze.html

While this article explains the issue, other similar hits by googling can offer a fix. I suggest you do and see what works for you. Of course, back-up critical or important data before any fix is applied.

FYI- MS supposedly knew about the issue and offers that Win10 is now more palpable to move to. Wink

Normally, your hard disk with Windows is the device you boot from. For some reason, that no longer works.

Steps to take (start with 1, end with 5 if necessary):
1. Reinstall Windows from your recovery partition
2. Reinstall Windows from your recovery disks
3. Replace the hard disk, then 2.
4. Replace the motherboard
5. Buy another laptop

It seems your post really isn't relative to the non-booting of the Asus based mtrbd. as explained in the post and link provided. You need to start an entire different thread(post) of your problem. That way you get attention on your problem alone.

You're non-booting offhand is HD based as you no longer have anything to boot from and the boot order is to use you network card/link, etc. and that isn't possible from the results. A quick test is make a bootable CD/DVD disc made from Linux live .ISO created file. The .ISO file like Ubuntu Linux will do fine once you burn it properly and then install in CD drive. The boot sequence should have the CD/DVD drive as the 1st boot device. Once there you will notice the boot device sequence, noting the HD, etc.. Visit the maker/vendor website for details in order to change that as required as laptops differ on how that's done. But some Fkey during boot or key(s) need be pressed to access booting menu.

ASUS only?
Sep 23, 2016 10:58PM PDT

Hi, I'm using a HP laptop and still running Windows 7. Is the problem above only concerning for those who use an ASUS device? Or anyone using Windows 7 ?
