Question

Win7 and its CA certificates store.

Apr 12, 2020 10:01PM PDT

I'm currently using XP Pro, but the outdated (and impossible to update) embedded certificates store is rendering use of any chrome/chromium based browser null. Over half the sites I try to reach throw up loads of certificate errors, most of which I cannot click through, so I'm effectively blockaded from those URLs. Anyway, the question is whether or not the same problem exists in Win7? Is it throwing up 101 certificate errors when surfing the net? Is its embedded security certificate store still able to be updated? I'm thinking of getting a used Win7 PC off Ebay just to surf the net, but not if the CA nazis have it screwed up as bad as my XP. What's the word? And no, Win8 or Win10 is not happening!

I've no such issues in an old Windows 7 PC. But they might slowly start coming now Windows 7 is no longer updated by Microsoft.

If you don't like Windows 10, why not use a Linux PC or Chromebook or Android or iOS tablet (or a Mac, of course) to surf. I don't expect such issues with any of those OS'es.

Why get a new PC at all.

You mention Chrome so why not boot up your choice of Linux, run Chrome and save your bucks? To me it works the same as any other Chrome browser since well, it's Chrome.

I need a solution now

I had been using MX Linux as LiveCD for nearly a year before my previous PC (Optiplex 755) had a HDD meltdown. My 'new' PC off Ebay is a Optiplex 960, but it is not letting me run LiveCD, so my only option is XP Pro. Once Commissar Newsom lifts his 'lets pretend California is not in quarantine mode', I can get a computer tech to do a housecall, circumvent the CA nazis and their 101 certificate errors blockade on XP (install a master certificate, or MITMproxy with SSL stripping capability). That could be months. Many months considering this lockdown has political mileage. I need a solution now. If Win 7 is immune to the CA blockade, I can get a cheap Win7 PC off Ebay, use it til I can get XP Pro 'fixed', then repurpose the Win7 PC for use as VPN, router, or airgapped-backup.

I've seen 960's run a Live Linux from USB.

what version of Chrome?

Sounds more like a browser problem than OS related.
