win2k freezes at startup on acer notebook

Mar 13, 2005 5:37PM PST

Hello, I have installed win2k on my Acer Travelmate 527TE, erasing the original installation of WinME. I use an external cd-rom writer, because the onboard cd-rom drive has died some months ago.
Setup process finished normally, as did the hardware auto-detect, but after reboot the system hangs completely (the blue stripe stops moving), and I have to reset the machine.
Booting in safe mode and running some kind of "doctor" software tells me that the problem should be around the AGP drivers. I tried to uninstall the ATI RAGE MOBILITY-M1 AGP video card drives and install new ones, but every time I reboot normally the system freezes at the same moment during the process.
I'm totally stuck, not being able to reinstall winME neither, because the boot floppy doesn't allow me to use the external cd-rom drive.
Thanks in advance for your attention and help.

Just FYI.

I found Acer uses a stock CDRW or such drive and replaced my CDRW with a DVD/CDRW last year.

In short, for not much you can fix your internal drive.

Here's what I used on my TER-600 -> http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CD-224E&cat=NBB Very much the same thing, but I found a DVD/CDRW which gave the laptop a new lease.

..for the great hint, I see that in the U.S. you pay the right prices for hardware. Here in Europe I can't find this cdrom for less than 60 euros! (shipping not included)
