Question

WIN10 LAN connection not working on one specific router.

Mar 6, 2016 1:42PM PST

I have a Windows 10 PC and was trying to sets up a LAN connection today. Wireless works fine, but I was getting some ping spikes so I wanted to rule out my wireless connection as a cause. Anyways, the LAN connection works when it's plugged into the Cisco Linksys E4200 Router (which is plugged into an Embarq 660 Series modem, quite old). It also works when it's plugged directly into this 660 Series modem.

However, it reads "unidentified network" if I try to plug into the combination modem/router on my other internet line. This is the unit: http://internethelp.centurylink.com/internethelp/modem-pk5001z.html It has 4 Ethernet ports on the back, one of which is utilized by another PC with no issues whatsoever. I have also had no problem connecting to this router wirelessly.

Any suggestions would be fantastic, it's been driving me a little bit mad.

Answer
(NT) You might try a new LAN card. Cheap compared to service.

Well, it works perfectly when I connect to one router and modem, just not the other. It's a new PC (arrived 3 months ago), so I doubt it's hardware related

If it was not hardware.

Then it should work. I've yet to see this be a driver issue. All it takes is for a router not to like a card or LAN chipset. Now that I've seen. Painful to the end user, simple for me as I flip in a new router or switch.

Blech. Sounds like I'm basically out of luck using this router with my ethernet card, then. Doesn't make sense! Curse you HP

Sorry I was unclear.

One of my favorite hacks or fixes was to put a switched hub inbetween the balky router and PC. These run about 10 and up bucks but service calls are 200+ bucks so we can discount that for free so we don't have to warranty the component.
