Question

Win10 can't access Facebook or Gmail

by jiriji / November 23, 2015 4:38 PM PST

I bought a new Acer Aspire desktop about 6 weeks ago and immediately upgraded from Win 8.1 to 10. I have intermittent problems with accessing both Gmail and Facebook, often having to switch browsers, shut down all browsers and reopen, or reboot the computer. Even when I gain access it doesn't last for more than an hour or so before I start to have trouble following links, viewing pictures, etc. I have AVG (full version) installed and have checked Firewall options. I ran Malwarebytes once and that helped for a while (deletion of registry entries??) but then the problem recurred. Any suggestions?

Win10 can't access Facebook or Gmail
by jiriji / November 23, 2015 8:26 PM PST

Scans find nothing and adjusting firewall settings doesn't make any difference. Sometimes I run the command "netsh winsock reset" and that fixes it for a while. Rebooting fixes it for a while. Closing and reopening browsers fixes it for a while. Nothing fixes it permanently. My job involves using Google Docs and I can't access them when Gmail won't connect. My old Dell computer running XP was fine, no problems, but I had to get a new PC so I could run the programs I need for work.

I couldn't even link to this site from the Gmail notification of your reply!

I have now uninstalled AVG and using Windows own firewall instead. Thanks for the info. If this doesn't fix it, I'll be baaaack.

logged off my facebook account

I don't know if there's any significance, but all I did was just logged off my facebook account on my phone (android) then wait for few minutes and then re-login it again (on phone). After a while when it successfully logged in on my phone, I restarted my laptop (from where I can't access facebook website. Then everything works fine, no more unavailable facebook website anymore. I think the main cause of the problem is the synchronization of my android phone to my laptop.

these are both Browser apps and your browser has more to do with this than Windows 10.

I understand from friends who have upgraded to win 10 that google apps such as google docs don't work well and Skype has disappeared. Does anybody know how my MS Outlook to Google calendar will fair?

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
