WIN XP won't boot - corrupted file? - Recovery Console bombs

Jul 2, 2007 11:22AM PDT

Boot says I have a corrupted file - hal.dll. Other attempt says other corrupted file: usbb.sys.

Here is the error for Recovery Console:

Trap 00000006 ========================Exception=======================
tr=0028 cr0=00000011 cr2=00000000 cr3=00000000

edi=00070000 esi=0000009F ebp=00060EB4 cr0=00000011 fs=0030 gs=0000

Subsequent tried to boot recovery console from original XP install disk failed. It just seems to bybass the dvd. I installed from same dvd.

I have a dial-up connection and as I remeber it I was not connected. I was running Sybot Search and Destroy. I don't know if it finished. I was out of the room.

I tried to run Safe Mode:
MULTI(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\ntoskrnl.exe
MULTI(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\hal.dll
MULTI(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\KDCOM.DLL
MULTI(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\BOOTVID.dll

Then it hung. I have a battery UPS. I was out of the room when the computer went down.

Thanks,
Bob

What is status of drives?
Jul 4, 2007 8:47PM PDT

Hi,
Thanks for the response. I haven't made any changes to my PC in the last two months. I had a cloned drive and it has the same problem. It is an older PC. I think the motherboard may be the problem. If I replace the motherboard what would the status of the drives be? Or, have they failed and are unoperable? Could it boot successfully from the existing drives? Or, is this just speculation at this point?

That recovery console bomb is troubling.

It does not indicate the machine is "in good shape." That boot is not dependent on what's on the hard disk so it's a sign the machine needs repair. It does not tell us what needs repair so try other boot disks like DOS and Linux. You might get lucky and spot an error message that can help in repair of the hardware.

Re: WIN XP won't boot- corrupt file?

I recently had the same XP problem. Thought it was the hard drive, but I had it professionally diagnoised. Hard drive was still good. For no apparent reason, the XP just failed. This appears not to be uncommon. I used a new drive and loaded a fresh XP from a CD that came with computer. I'm now using the "old" drive as slave, and transfering files. I'm just a beginner, so I'm definitely not an expert, at this stuff..... but, your symptoms sure sound familiar. Hopefully a tech or someone else with experience, can give you some definite answers. Good luck.
