Win XP SP2 Halts 15% of Systems, Survey Says. . .

System administrators who have been installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 on their own PCs and on test systems are reporting the results of their practice runs to the SANS Institute Web site--and the failure rate seems to be pretty high.

Hi, Diana.

Did you ever get SP1 to work on your system, or just back off to a clean install w/o it?

After recovering my data, reloading XP and all my programs, I backed it up to a separate hard drive and reinstalled SP1 and it worked. The second installation was nothing like the first so I figured they must have fixed it.

Hi Wayne:

I've been considering an upgrade (from Windows 2000) mainly to accomodate kiddie software that isn't compatible with W2K, but as with any Microsoft OS release I'll wait awhile and see what the feedback is before taking the plunge.

in the meantime it's 15% of 752....

i installed it on my PC and it runs OK...

the new XP firewall "always on" scared the **** out of me at first, but apart from that, no problems...

to a notify only, and will probably not do further updates until the smoke clears.

Looks like MS shot themselves in the foot. What if there's an update which REALLY needs to be done, but everybody refuses to do it?

Hello Wayne,

Interesting, but after reading through the various comments it became obvious that many who "had to rebuild" did so because they are pretty unfamiliar with XP or any other version of NT.

It appears for the most part that many are NOT system Admins but home users who opted to download the full SP (network version) and install it without bothering with reading the SP notes. Few even attempted Recovery Console for the simple fixes.

The give away for home VS. Admin comments? Look at the number complaining about losing data not backed up.

As has been noted, the 15% is of 752.

SP2 has still not been released to the general public. Got to expect some to have trouble when it is released, just like with SP1 with many people who do not have a completely perfect running PC in the 1st place. With SP1..I waited a couple months. On my dial-up it took AIR 1 hour, 45 minutes, with no problems on WinXP Home. This time I'll wait for the CD. Never have checked those blocks allowing automatic upgrading of Windows Updates. Want to see and do myself.

A place supposedly to order the SP2 CD when available to the general public:

Course' there seems to be some apps problems...

In reply to: Re: Win XP SP2 Halts 15% of Systems, Survey Says. . .

*"Microsoft has identified 50 apps that "seem to stop working" once SP2 is installed ? as well as 200 apps (some of which are also on the first list) that "may behave differently" once SP2 is installed. The list of 200 runs the gamut from instant-messaging software, to enterprise backup programs, to games."*
