Try another drive. This issue is an old one.

Ray posted this for me.....I was busy today and couldn't get in here to post it myself, Bob.
I have a dvd burner that works perfectly, and the cdrw is a brand new one right out of the box....Newly formatted XP install with both drives being installed new into the system.
I realized right away that this was an old issue, but couldn't find my text file that dealt with a possible solution, so if you could help me out with what may have worked before to fix it, I would appreciate it.
Thanks...Toni
is in the hospital re heart attack. I talked to her yesterday and she never got to investigate the possible solution. She is hoping that you, or anyone else, may be able to provide some additional insight, so that when she gets back home she can attempt to correct the problem.
Toni seemed fairly certain that she had seen the problem and solution somewhere in the forums, she inteneded to save itamong her tips but forgot to.
My original post was in error in that the DVD Burner works fine. It is only the CD-R/RW burner DVD Reader combo that has the problem. [brand new unit, Lite-On]
1. The article [Q314060] discusses issues when uninstalling and reinstalled Nero in XP, or performing an upgrade from a previous OS to XP without uninstalling Nero first -- a known issue for both Adaptec and Nero. The resolution in general is to edit the system registry and removing the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values from the system registry.

3. The article [Q824894] describes issues that may occur if your CD-ROM or DVD drive is not configured correctly, the CD-ROM or DVD is damaged or dirty, or the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) installation is damaged.

6. Use the Windows Drivers and Network Adapters troubleshooter.
I've yet to see any successes in the real world on this issue. We do try the drive in another machine to see if it works there before calling it dead. New or not doesn't seem to have any bearing on the problem.
What has helped is to update the firmware in the drive. But this can be beyond some user's capabilities (to find and to install!)
You have more options, but with CDRW drives costing from 10 to 20 dollars about town here, you lose if you pay a tech or employee to fix one of these rather than just replace it.

computer nut, and simply won't give up too easily. So she'll try everything that you and Texas Bill has provided for her to research.
He keeps me in check over what costs less.
Repair, replace, trouble shooting, attempts at repair all cost some amount of time or money.
I've seen people try to fix this issue for many weeks and even when I lend them a CDRW to test and they find it to work, they want to fix the old drive.
How to help those?
Bob
