The scan and repair is forever. I usually pull out my W10 USB install and repair stick and boot that to see if I can get at the drive contents. Now I know everyone has skills but not all can use that boot stick so I also use a Live Linux boot stick since it is a full OS and lets me see a lot more than usual. No learning or installing Linux either.

-> We NEVER repair that file system unless the owner's files are safe on backups. Once files are safe we can try chkdsk on the HDD or drive that is mucked up. I should not have to write which flags to use but just ask which I use if you are very new to this sort of work.

Most folk just reinstall the OS. The next group of folk replace the old drive to save it for recovery later, install some SSD, then the OS and then when it's working add the old drive and try to get at their files.
