Win Media Player backup to DVD?

Apr 20, 2008 4:37PM PDT

I've accumulated a couple thousand songs and I'd like to back them up to DVD. The thing is that I have duplicates on different albums but all of the duplicates are not included in the library. For example, there are three different copies of the Ventures doing "Walk Don't Run" but only one in is the "library."

I just want to back up the library. WMP will do that to CD-ROM but it doesn't even recognize the my DVD burned exists.

Any suggestions how I can get around this?

Thanks.

If the dvd doesn't need to be playable in a standalone..

dvd player, then instead of backing up to a cd rom, just back it up to folders and then just do a datacopy of the folders to a dvd disc.

Not sure if I understand what you're saying

If you're saying that I can use Burning Nero or equivalent program to copy the entire "My Music" folder to a DVD, I know that I can do that.

The problem is that "My Music" contains songs that aren't in the "Library." For example, I have three copies of "Sloop John B." so I deleted two from the library but left them on the hard drive just so albums wouldn't have holes in them in case . . . not really sure why I hate to delete things.

Did I misunderstand your suggestion?

If I did, do you have any other suggestions?

Better backup too much files than not enough.

Your hard disk can fail tomorrow. And then you'll regret.

With 1000+ mp3's on a DVD it are a few DVD's, so it's at most 2 hours work.

Then make a separate backup copy of your media player music library and - if need arises - you can restore both the library and the music to its exact state. What more do you want?

tells where to find the library.
The music is in My Music, presumably, but you already know that.

Well, not quite the answer that I wanted but that's life. I wanted to be able to just copy the selected songs from the "library" so I could give it to a friend so she won't have to sort through and re-do the work I did by getting rid of the duplicates.

I guess I'll just give her the whole mess and she can sort through everything herself.

However, your point about backup is very good. I'll do that right away, along with copying the library database. I haven't reached two DVDs, I rip to WMA so I'm only at 3.6 GB. Happy

Thanks.

have you tried other media players?

If WMP doesn't work for you, then maybe you should try another media player. Perhaps Media Monkey or CDEX. I don't use either of these myself as I use iTunes for my iPods. I imagine you'll have to go through the process of importing your music into the media player's library and then weeding out the duplicates.
