Win Media Center has no cursor - why?

Dell Inspiron and Lenovo Ideapad both running Vista Home Premium - both same problem. Very hard to use Media Center with no cursor showing. I guess where it should be and move mouse in the vicinity of an icon hoping to get desired activity. In neither machine has Media Center ever worked out of the box except wondering where the cursor is.

With no written instructions any more, I have to ask what's wrong here?
