boot into MS-DOS and run the DOS-version of scandisk.
But I agree with Cursorcowboy that to get any real help for your problem you have to tell the whole story, with details.

1. I say your use of "crashes" and "I think" is misleading to say the least without your having giving a full description of the anomaly observed.
2. Please read the article, "List of Articles About the ScanDisk Tool (Q287914)" and see if any of them address your plea.
here are details of my problem:
configuration of my PC: PII 350MHz, 160 MB SDRAM (128+32 MB), windows 98se
symptoms: When I run scandisk in DOS mode, it runs okay but when I run scandisk in Windows mode (command line, start menu, ...) it start without any problems or errors, but when I click anywhere, BSD('blue screen of death') appears. there is following text: 'fatal error 0028:C02990C in VXD VWIN32(05) + 00000BF4'. I can't find any solution in MSKB(Microsoft Knowledge Base). I really need your help.
1. A fan blowing into the case?
If this makes a difference, consider that the CPU (and other fans) collect lint and dust and build up insulating layers on the heat sinks.
2. That memory combo is a bit "odd". Try it with just ONE stick and run this memory test for at least an hour. In spite of how long it runs only ZERO failures is a pass. http://www.memtest86.com
3. Try this in safe mode.

Franky's easy solution. Kill the baby (ScanDisk)
and use an alternate like Norton Disk Doctor
or McAfee Utilities similar application.
1 At C:\, change the attributes of: MSDOS.SYS
file to -H -S -R
2 Edit this file and at [Options] add the line
AutoScan=0
