I've upgraded my W98SE machines to 6. No sweat.
Installed IE6 SP1, how did it go? Are you happy with it?
I am still using 5.5 SP2 and thinking about upgrading but I heard that there were problems with Win 98.
Thanks for your input.

For me it has depended on the computer. On the 2 newer ones with better processors and video, I've had no problems. On the 2 older ones with 500mhz and old 4mb video, it was a disaster. Numerous weird things and errors that I can't remember now, but I had to revert back to IE 5.5.
I didn't really care, as I use Opera browser, but I have to keep IE for a husband that thinks he can't find anything online if he's not using it.
I know to have the motherboard, video, audio, directx up to the latest as possible for this OS.
IE 6 can be an issue for older machines with video or other items that will see no updates.
In fact, why do this? IE 5.5 SP2 is as patched up as MS seems to do things and if you want to dodge the bullet, use any other browser whenever you can. Such as Mozilla.

I installed IE6 SP1 (also SP1 to WinXP)on my 1? year old WinXP desktop with no problems.
I still have IE 5.5 SP2 on my 4 year old 500 MHz Win98se desktop and have no plans to upgrade it to IE6.
I know there is a difference in the two, but frankly my dear I can't tell the difference, caring less to possibly screwing up my older Win98se puter. ![]()
BTW there is a top computer techie in these forums who used to a paid Moderator in ZDNet that still uses
IE version 5.01 SP2 with Windows 98FE as his primary computer.

Well it works and doesn't give me any grief.

Hi Bob,
I have a pretty old Gateway 300XL (ie 300 Mhz) at 128MB RAM(circa late '97/early '98), with an OLD NVIDA card(from the same era) & IE6 SP1 works fine for me, never had a problem with IE6, just everyday resource problems, which really means I need a newer computer with MORE resources to run all the programs I currently do run.
Take care,
Steve

I thought like you do, and resisted the change, preferring my proven and trusted 5.5 SP2. Then i had a processor upgrade and new primary hard drive fitted, and my dealer installed IE6 SP1 and WMP9 without my knowledge or consent.
While I could bash out his brains for the WMP infection, as I prefer WMP 7.1, I now prefer IE6 over 5.5, and find no problems with it. It has security enhancements such as cookie control (Privacy options) and the ability to lock the browser toolbar to prevent hijacking, which alone make it worth the transition.
All I would say, is that I do not know how mine was installed since they did it at the shop, but I would be inclined to uninstall IE 5.5 first to avoid any possible anomalies. Perhaps this upgrade would be a good time for a reformat and clean install of the whole system to clear out the debris of past usage?
