Win 98 users - Critical security update issued today!

Feb 2, 2004 6:16AM PST

"Identified security issues in Internet Explorer could allow an attacker to compromise a Windows-based system. For example, an attacker could run programs on your computer while you view a Web page. This affects all computers with Internet Explorer installed (even if you don?t run Internet Explorer as your Web browser). After you install this item, you may need to restart your computer."

This critical update is an Internet Explorer cumulative update, and is for all Windows versions except 95, because the issues it covers arrived before the support cut off for 98 and ME.

You can get it via the Windows Updates page as normal, which will install it immediately. It is not shown in the Windows Update Catalog yet, and probably won't be for users of these versions.

BUT you can download and save it to your computer for future use (recommended), by visiting the security article's page at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=70530968-B59A-47C0-90D3-0C884910BC97&displaylang=en

Thank you. I went to the windows update on my 98se and there it was. Issued 1/22. Never received a notice from Microsoft which I should have. I downloaded the patch. I think the support for 98se has been extended to June, 2006 Thanks again. Joan

Ive been getting a bunch of those e-mails too. MICROSOFT says to NEVER download a MICROSOFT UPDATE from an e-mail. They say they never ask you to do that. Always go to MICROSOFT UPDATE from their web page. Ive been forwarding those e-mails to Microsoft and get e-mail errors that says I sent it to some wierd address that I never heard of. It redirectes any fowarding.
