win 98 msconfig problem

Feb 2, 2005 10:23PM PST

Using windows 98: when I select start/run/msconfig the window launches for about 2 seconds then disappears. I'm trying to get to a point that I can disable some background running programs. Any help?

That's a known SPYWARE infection.

Time to ..

a. Learn about spyware.
b. Stop using Internet Explorer all the time.
c. Eject all the pests you find with Adaware, Spybot then report back how it turned out.

In closing, Adaware and Spybot cost nothing and are found on google.com

Isolated the problem to the W32beagle.n@mm virus. Couldn't launch spybot until the virus was found by Norton antivirus then also ran spybot. Thanks for assistance.

You definitely have some malware on your computer. Here's a way to fix this:

1. Download and install both Spybot Search & Destroy AND AdAware.

2. Boot your computer into safe mode. This will load just the basic drivers to start your computer and will not load most of the spyware.

3. While in safe mode, run both Spybot and AdAware, removing anything they detect.

4. Reboot your computer into Normal mode and rerun both Spybot and AdAware.

This should remove 99% of the malware infecting your computer and allow you to run msconfig to sidestep the rest.
