Win 98 (first edition) -vs- Win 98SE ???

Feb 25, 2004 1:34AM PST

What does 98SE offer, that 98FE doesn't have? Is there a way to easily upgrade?

I purchased a wireless USB adapter, so that I can gain internet access on my Win 98FE PC, but the USB adapter say I need at least 98SE (my other Windowns XP PC is hooked up wired to my router which allows both wired and wireless connections).

It seem that maybe your reply was cut short. Do you mean that if I install the latest Windows 98 service pack, that will get me from 98FE to 98SE? I see that it includes new / additional USB and networking files, which I likely need to address my problem.

Not entirely. ICS as a HOST is not supplied.

Windows 98se is the only o s that off full usb capabilitys with full plug n play capaabilitys over windows 95 or windows 98. If you didn't get the message that microsoft sent out as 01-14-04 microsoft will no longer support windows 98se on down for securities updates or drivers or software updates. They are forcing people to buy the newer o s.

Odd... I'm running Win98 OEM, (with IE5.5 on top) and with the patches I've applied, I seem to have no problem with PnP USB on a Via KT400 based board with 6 USB 2.0's. (gigabyte GA-7VAXP)

Win98FE (due not there are a TON of different FE's) does have USB drives in it. I run win98FE and have a old computer with a 2 port USB. I don't know if it's just because it's 98FE and not SE, that u can't by default stick something into it and it'll load, but you have to reboot the computer in order to load the item.

Your MB has USB on it by default so it will load it no problem, can u plug in a device and get it to read? I know at least on my 2 port pci card it won't until I reboot. But 98SE is "supposely" more stable and has a few more useless utilties for netwokring and what not that are as I've said useless, but I guess the more "stable" part I guess what it needs.

But either way as I see it 98 and 98SE are basically the same, but SE as more junk added to it you'll never use (well I never did), they are both in my opinion stil extremly unstable, but they offer the most flexable OS than any other OS on the market. Screw Micorsoftly, I personally LOVE dealing with 98 and use it on my main computer that is up and running 24/7. Unstable, but hey it works! LOL Not that I can do too much as it's only a cyrix 166, but for the basic stuff I do it works plenty.

First minoir point, M$ has extended support of a kind until 2006 for Win98SE et al! You can download all the current fixes but it is unlikely that NEW ones will appear soon, if ever.
Did you check the Bios to see if USB is supported and ENABLED??? If you haven't enabled USB then naturally Win98 can't utilise it.
SE does run better than the basic 98 in my opinion but you could try finding a copy of Win98PLUS which has compressed folders which you may find very useful. there is no reason why Win98 should not be able to run a USB setup unlees as I mentioned you haven't enabled it in the motherboard bios.
