Resolved Question

win 7 updates after restore

Oct 29, 2014 7:06AM PDT

Finally got system restore done. Downloaded most of the drivers, starting with Bios. nvidia driver didn't update. Sata firmware update said system doesn't meet requirements. Then went to windows update said needed about 250. was down to about 89 when it restarted and it came up with numerous flashes of things with .exe on white small screen(like maybe ie browser).Nothing would open, nothing would work. I finally deleted many of the updates. I now have everything back up and working. I eliminated user under who that issue started. But now need to know what updates should I install (if any) on hp 6214y desktop. Additionally, I would like to know what settings should be used for updates, and how to achieve that in windows 7. Have been happily in 8.1 and don't remember actions in 7. Thank you for any assistance. Please state if any additional info is needed.

Tell a little more.

Such things like drivers are not from Microsoft's Windows Update but is still done the old fashioned way. Your post sounds like you are trying a clean install. That's a lot of work and burns up a lot of folk. Since it's a HP, why not use the OS it came with?

That would handily get it all working again but Microsoft's updates to the OS is indeed over 200.

Can I not do microsoft updates?
Oct 29, 2014 7:05PM PDT

Thank you for taking the time to answer Bob.
First I tried to go back to a restore point that was done with a microsoft update quite a while ago. In my defense-I gave this machine to a family member almost two years ago and did not see it again till this week. He started having issues a few months later After going back to the restore point things went from bad- blue screen- to worse. Wound up with Bootmgr missing.
I initially didn't have access to the restore discs that i had made originally. So I tried ISO. Dismal failure. Tried (on microsoft tech advice) same windows 7 home premium recovery, but for my acer laptop (originals from company)- not the HP desktop. Another failure. Tried to buy new copy windows 7 from Microsoft . They don't have any for sale. Asked about windows 8. Same story. So I got the discs and used them . Installed the drivers and then went to update windows. Did 8 the first time and computer didn't like it. Restarted and did 4 at a time with restart after each set. Was finally down to about 86 left - And then multiple .exe popups on start up and no programs -other than word -..Finally one of those somehow opened firefox. Think it was the bleeping computer ? site that was download of Hkill and then from them malwarebytes- You are right that it gets mind boggling after a while. But, I was enjoying the challenge. And over the years you have taught me to persevere. Am not sure at which point, but I did uninstall a ton of the updates that I had just installed. At the moment am running disc defraggler from piriform. Will then try each program. To my surprise all personal data was preserved and lots of programs. Since I don't know which of the microsoft updates caused problems, I don't know which to avoid.
The question is can I just avoid them all and can I turn off all future "automatic updates". And what would be the consequences of that action.
Sorry this is so long, and am sure I still left somethings out.
Thank you for any assistance and advice.

Yes that is the site I used. Having you say repeatedly to do back ups has helped many, including me. Everything was backed up. I had made the recovery set before doing anything else when I bought the computer. I have run Defraggler about 15 times. Have now removed many no longer needed progrems and documents. Have more to go. But running defragger yet again. It is no longer saying it will take more than a day. So far everything seems to now be working properly. When I went to check on status of windows updates a good number of those i had recently installed/uninstalled seem to be back but, they are not causing any problems.
I don't know where this fits in but I did find McAfee after Windows was back. I uninstalled it and several other antispyware/malware programs. I suspect there were too many and causing conflicts.
Just for others HP won't talk to you about anything unless you pay upfront once something is out of warranty.
I really appreciate your help. I am constantly amazed at your breadth of knowledge.
