Win 7 - Directory Search/Scan Never Resolves

I'm experiencing an unusual problem with Explorer.exe that applies to only one directory on my hard drive. The directory contains about 30 .wav and .mp3 files plus whatever hidden/system files the system puts in there. The issue presents like this:

1) With the GUI File Explorer, I open the directory to access the files.

2) The blue search bar that sits transparently behind the address bar begins to progress from left to right (note I have not activated the search function)

3) The search bar continues its progress from left to right but never completes and remains near the right.

4) While this 'search' is occurring, my CPU increases to near 100% activity

5) Actions in 3 & 4 never resolve, they continue, essentially for eternity, until I manually kill the Explorer.exe process.

Apart from the obvious CPU problem, the files in the directory cannot be read by a couple of my audio programs and for other audio programs that can play the files, this issue seems to interfere with their read access to the files and even the audio application's shutdown/exit process.

I have taken the following steps to resolve:

1) Delete recent files I added to the directory in case they were corrupt

2) Copied the directory's contents (after doing 1) to a new directory using a DOS Copy function

3) Turned off indexing on the drive

4) Run CHKDSK on the drive

So apart from doing a disc surface scan which takes a couple of hours, I'm out of ideas. I'm assuming I have a corrupt file in there. Are there any programs out there that can maybe fix this problem?
