Question

Win 7 Computer Won't Get Updates Since Win 10 Installed

Mar 11, 2017 12:01PM PST

My wife's ZT computer running Win 7 auto-loaded Win 10 without permission. I reverted back to Win 7 and she just informed me that it hasn't loaded Win 7 updates sine I restored Win 7. I have tried to find a fix but have been unable to find or get help from Microsoft. Could you please provide direction as to how to fix and restore this update function. Thank you.

Log in to the Windows 7 as an administrator. Click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Turn automatic updating on or off.

If the restore is all the way back to 7 without SP1 I find I have manually go find and install IE11 and SP1.

Here's how I google for that.

Google "Windows 7 SP1 network install"
Google "Windows 7 IE11 full install"

I rolled back to Win 7 also and ever since than , no Windows Updates .
So after months and months of uninstalling updates and this and that .
Today I was looking at some old backup disc images and found the original Win 7 upgrade from Vista Image that I created in 2008 .
I used that image and rebooted into safe mode with internet .
I updated Revo uninstaller , uninstalled Avast , Auslogics Disc defragg and Firefox because I didn't want those things trying to update at the same time as Windows .

Rebooted normally and installed security essentials because Windows sent up a red flag about no anti-virus.
Rebooted again normally and waited a few minutes and checked for updates and Windows is installing 175 important updates as we speak . I have a feeling I'll be getting more non important ones after reboot.

I do have Win 7 original disc but am afraid to reload ZT Computer. This is the main computer that my wife uses for all family, and household business. I'm afraid to undertake a reload of OS (Win 7) as not sure how many working programs will either be reset or deleted. My wife would throw me out of the house if I make her computer useless.

You would back up any files and folders from prior experiences that we can't lose what we have backed up .

Next you create a new system image to restore the OS computer back to where it is now.
and than,

you would use the original disc's that you have

I just booted up that computer and checked for Windows updates and 16 more important updates are being installed as we speak.

I'm sure more will be found as time goes by

Be prepared!

Some time in the future (maybe tomorrow, maybe next year, maybe in 3 years) your computer breaks down and you need to buy a new one. Or is attacked by ransomware or is hacked and needs to be reset.

Then either you or your wife or your IT guy needs to set up everyting with all programs and all data and all settings she needs to run her family and household business, or the new computer will be useless.

So this is a good opportunity to practice this scenario. Start making an image backup (to 2 different external disks) so you can go back to it if necessary, then reinstall Windows and pretend it's a new PC (in some sense it is, but on the same hardware). Then together with your wife make it fully operational again. If it fails, note all reasons why (like: we couldn't find the MS Office disk with the license code, and had no idea what the password of our e-mail account was) go back to the image and make the necessary preparations for if it's really needed in stead of just an exercise.

about that image backup and restore, invest in a new hard disk, install that replacing the old one, and start all over. If it fails, just put the old disk back and continue as usual.

Repeat the exercise when you feel you ARE fully prepared. When fully content, start using that new disk as a backup disk.

Win 7 Computer Won't Get Updates Since Win 10 Installed

HOORAY for Norton/Symantec 2nd level support. During the process of renewing my Norton Security for the next year I happened to mention the issue of the ZT computer no longer being able to get Microsoft Win 7 updates. They recommended that I check Windows Update Readiness Tool for Win 7. I searched and located the and tried KB947821. This did not appear to fix problem and through additional tools on the page it recommended to run Network Tool. The combination of the two tools restored the function of the Win 7 Updates. It appears as all is well in La La Land and computer is now running as new. Thank You Norton/Symantec!
