Win 10 updates vs. new computer version

Jul 27, 2019 5:46AM PDT

We all keep reading how Microsoft is in a quandry with their latest 1903 updates. I was wondering if the people who buy new pc's that came with win 10, if they have any problems and do they have the 1903 version, or they have to wait like the rest of us?

All good here.

I wish you would be more specific about the Issues here. As we know, Microsoft is blocking incompatible systems from installing it so to avoid issues where they can as they either find a workaround or fix. In some cases such as my oldest (now stolen) 2006 Dell Inspiron I would not be chuffed if 1903 didn't install. Since it was stolen, the oldest laptop in the fleet at the office (lots of laptops) is now gone and the rest appear to be on 1903.

1903 apparently is rolling out. There is no way to placate those that are upset about not getting it now and you did upset those that felt like the update was showing up and barging in the door.

If the Windows 10 system is that rattling, why not Linux? It has Chrome, a great Office Suite and more.

...chuckling over this 1903 débâcle Microsoft's fallen into. Hope for those long suffering through Win10 they get it all fixed. The internet's ablaze about it.

My wish.

Is it to happen to any of the dozens of laptops at office or home. I've lost track how many times a client is complaining about something then I reinstall some driver, change a setting and it's fine.

-> WHY THIS HAPPENS. Microsoft does not get the right drivers for us and does not preserve settings on the big updates.

-> WHY I THINK THIS IS GETTING WORSE. Folk have the PC setup by Geeksquad so they don't know where the settings are.

I was unclear.

We have 1903 at the office the impact was minimal. Yes, a few changes to set which browser to use but my point is that a lot of the complaints (?) are about things that a Windows user should be adept at.

Should Microsoft coddle the users?

been trying to decide something this week.

Lady at church, gave her a computer, old socket "A" a few years back. Put XP and Vista (cheaply bought off EBay when they were being dumped). It's died now. Told her I'd fix up a newer one, I have several dual cores, just sitting in basement. I can put Mint & W7 on it, dual boot. Maybe I could still manage to get W7 to become W10, but figure the hardware might preclude it being completely update-able. Or I could just leave W7 and it's remaining year of support on it. I'm also considering putting just Mint Linux on it and give to her that way instead. So, those are the choices.

1) W7 upgraded to W10 if possible, with Mint 19

2) W7 'as is" upgraded fully, with Mint 19

3) Mint 19 only

4) Mint 19, but W7 in a virtual box situation after full upgrading it.

The problem with #4 is an upgrade of Mint version later can break VBox where it has to be installed again, of course the existing .vhd or .vdi can be imported, but I think beyond her knowledge level.

What would you do in that situation? I will see her tomorrow at church, but also never said I'd have it for her that soon. If I just did the Mint 19 I could hand it to her tomorrow.

Let me share what Mom is getting.

A Chromebook. The last laptop was given back full of trojans and gambling programs that a stepson has installed. My brother and I have had enough. For her, it's just webmail, the web, etc. so a Chromebook will sidestep all that and maybe the stepson (who should get their own damn machine) will not be able to gamble and trojan this one.

If that's not good enough, we say "Sorry, but that's all we have today." (go buy your own.)

As to your 1 to 4, with Chrome and more on Mint working EXACTLY the same as on Windows, why bother with Windows?

Yes, I think I'll do that.

I'll put Mint 19 on it, and let her extended family "helpers" crap it up then if they want to. One relation/in-law of hers is fairly savvy, and uses Unix in his work (not sure in what capacity) so that should be OK alone for her. She may not even realize it till she tries to install some third party windows based program on it. I'll just make sure most of what she'd want in windows is installed with a linux based version similar. I don't think she ever used Vista on the former one I gave her years ago. I do remember she had some XP problem and a nephew fixed that for her, so it's not like I'm on the obligation hook if something goes awry with it.
