Question

Win 10 Update won't install

Apr 30, 2018 2:49PM PDT

For some time now Windows 10 update KB4088776 won't install but it keeps coming up in windows update. Today I have been updating several computers in the house to the new April 2018 update but this one laptop has the problem with update KB4088776 which seems to block the April 2018 update from showing up. How do I skip this KB4088776 update so I can get to the new April 2018 update.

Answer
May have to wait.

Are you sure it's not what Microsoft noted below?

"Even though the update was successfully installed, Windows Update incorrectly reports that the update failed to install. Select Check for Updates to confirm that there are no additional updates available.

You can also type About your PC in the search box on the taskbar to confirm that your device is using the expected OS build.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release."

RE: Windows 10 Update won't install
Apr 30, 2018 5:04PM PDT

When I check for updates KB4088776 is already downloading after which the awating restart button is there. When I restart it does not update it does a normal restart and as soon as windows come up there's the notice that the update could not finish. And the viscous cycle continues with the same thing over and over.

Microsoft still gives free support on failing updates.

But here's a recent finding. I had to run CHKDSK /F /R /X on a PC on all drive letters and a pending update finally installed.

There may be other factors like an overzealous antivirus, firewall, VPN or other user added things I can't guess here.

Answer
Have You Tried Installing It Manually Offline?
Apr 30, 2018 5:34PM PDT

Assuming the problem computer is currently on Windows 10 version 1709, click on the link below for the Microsoft Update Catalog for KB4088776. Once there, download the full, offline cumulative update to your desktop. Once it's there, exit the internet and run the update offline. Hopefully it installs correctly and solves the problem.

Hope this helps.

Windows 10 Update KB4088776 won't install
May 1, 2018 8:23AM PDT

I did the offline manual update. I noticed the update says "cumulative" but once installed it says "security update for KB4088776". The "security update KB4088776" installs correctly with no problem. Bu when I got back to windows update the "cumulative update for KB4088776" is back waiting for restart but the same old problem once again.

Starting to sound like the issue Microsoft noted above.
May 1, 2018 8:28AM PDT

I take it the CHKDSK work is done and there are no other security apps installed. We can run with Windows Defender for a while when working such issues.

If the work noted above was done, it appears you have the issue Microsoft noted and have to wait for a fix.

Yep.. Normally The Offline Manual Install Should Fix It
May 1, 2018 8:35AM PDT

Unless the update recognition problem mentioned in the Microsoft article you posted earlier is causing the issue.

But as before, if Walt would like to install the normal April 2018 update, he should be able to download it by Knowledgebase number at the Windows Update Catalog site and install it offline. That should take care of the problem. To download the April update, the link below should get that done.

Hope this helps.

April 2018 Update
May 1, 2018 9:22AM PDT

Thanks Grif for the link to download the latest windows update. Under Device Specifications my system states x64 based but I noticed the KB4088776 update and a few others are x86 based systems. When I download the April 2018 update I'm inclined to select the x64 based version. is this correct?

Both X86 & X64 Updates Are Available At The Link I Provided

In your case, if the machine says it's an x64 version, then I'd recommend downloading the x64 offline update and running it.

Hope this helps.

KB4093105 - April 2018 Update
May 1, 2018 12:13PM PDT

I did the offline install for KB4093105 (April 201Cool update. It didn't work. When I click on view installed updates KB4093105 says requires restart to finish install but it does not install. That pesky KB4088776 keeps coming back. Geez! I hope Microsoft hurries with a fix for this.

Let me share why I ask to run chkdsk with FRX.
May 1, 2018 12:17PM PDT

I have encountered Windows machines (almost every version) with pending to install updates and too many times I do the full chkdsk with FRX and after the work, the install finishes.

What makes your KB issue worse is that Microsoft documented it will install but show as not installed. This isn't the first time a KB has shown this behavior.

CHKDSK was fine

Thanks R. Proffitt. I ran CHKDSK and all is fine. Looks like I'll just have to wait for Microsoft to fix the issue.

But was chkdsk run with F R and X?

Sometimes folk do or don't.

I did not use those parameters to run CHKDSK.

Seems there's something left to get done.

I'm not writing this will fix it but it's a recurring thing that has helped.
