General discussion

Will you be installing Windows Vista on your system?

Feb 1, 2006 8:32AM PST

Will you be installing Windows Vista on your system this year?

Yes, as soon as the final version is released.
I'm already on the beta version. (How do you like it?)
After it's been out for a few months. (How long will you wait?)
No way! (Why not?)
I will buy a new system with it already installed.
I don't even have XP yet!
I'm on a Mac and will never go to the dark side.
Don't know yet.

Has any new release of Windows been at least 80% bug free?
Feb 2, 2006 9:37PM PST

HELL NO!
I would'nt touch it with a 10 foot pole until SP2 is released.

No Way!
Feb 2, 2006 9:42PM PST

I guess I am either just tired of providing Microsoft with more of my hard earned money, or I am just really satisfied with the way XP works on my computer and its stability. Either way, I don't forsee Vista or Longhorn or whatever the next OS change is going to be showing up on my computer unless it is included in the purchase of a new computer.

Wait a little...
Feb 2, 2006 10:51PM PST

With Windows 2000 and Windows XP, I waited for the release of Service Pack 1 before upgrading. This way the OS had been running on a wide userbase and all major bugs and quirks were discovered and fixed. (And only since a couple of months there are very little updates to be downloaded for XP.)
I'm not sure if I'm going to wait that long for Vista, but I'll wait a couple of months, so all obvious bugs are discovered and fixed.
It will also depend on my needs. I don't need all the visual enhancements (like Aero,....), heck, I even have all enhancements turned off in XP, since I don't want to work with Windows, I want to work with my applications that run on it.
So as long as I don't need Vista (because of a certain software package that requires it), I'll take a step back and wait a little....

Your looking at Longhorn.....

Windows Vista is Longhorn.

Longhorn is just the nickname they had for Vista in it's early development stages.

On My Next Computer - Preinstalled
Feb 2, 2006 11:05PM PST

I only use the operating system that is preinstalled on my computer. Dramatic operating system upgrades are an invitation to compatability problems. My current computer is near the end of it's life cycle, and I hope to replace it with a Vista-preinstalled system in the future. I'm sure that Vista will have it's flaws, but it has to be better than the awful security hole that is XP.

Preinstalled is my choice
Feb 3, 2006 9:13AM PST

I just spent two days troubleshooting a virus and rebuilding the software on a computer with XP. I am not in the mood to tackle another OS. I think Vista will draw hackers attention away from XP. SO I am excited that maybe less attention on XP will make my life easier. When did you last hear of a Windows98 virus attack?

I also have better experience with a computer preloaded than trying to upgrade a 2-3 year old machine with the latest hardware.

Other than a decent backup utility, I am satisfied with XP's features.

NO I will not be installing any new os's by Microsoft.I have been switching all my systems over to linux based for the last few months.SUSe 10.0 and Fedora to name a few.

After a while nothing will work with the older versions and we'll be forced to upgrade. Oh, well...

Not till they quit supporting XP
Feb 2, 2006 11:31PM PST

Why would I bloat down my current computer which runs quite nicely.

Besides gaming which I don't really get into I think a 2.2Ghz cpu, 1GB ram, 300 Gig hard drive with XP should last me another 10 years if the hardware keeps up.

Why fill my poor hardware with Microsoft's newest Bloated OS when XP runs quite fast now.

If I eventually have to-mabe a different OS

When MS stops supporting XP, then maybe I will have the balls to try a different OS.

There are plenty of live versions of Linux that will run without touching your hard drive. you don't even need a Hard Drive!

Check out here:

A somewhat fast cpu and decent ammount of ram is a +. 500 p3 or better 256mb or better for optimal results with most live distros.

Windows XP should be the last version of a Microsoft OS that I ever buy. Windows keeps getting bigger, which in turn means more bugs and slower performance. Unlike every other high tech product imaginable, the price performance does not improve every generation, but instead gets steadily worse as they use their monopoly market control to maintain proprietary pricing on what should be a commodity item.

I currently dual boot my own machine, between XP and SuSe Linux. By the time XP is no longer supported, the continuous improvements in Linux for the desktop and important applications like OpenOffice will make the choice purely one of personal preference...not which platform do I have to use because of application compatibility. I'll have to help my wife adjust to using Linux, but it won't take much training. The modern distros are point and click today, and for anyone who has ever used Macs, DOS and Windows (those of us with more than 5 or 10 years using computers) Linux is just another operating system.

Microsoft should have spent as much time and energy building quality software as they have in maintaining control over their monopoly, and then most of us would have no reason to dump them.

Vista We GO? No!
Feb 2, 2006 11:57PM PST

I just downloaded the MS Beta antispy ware program and have had several problems with it as an annoyance with its own pop up's, etc. and with what appears to be bugs still in it. With Vista, I'll do the same thing and wait for about a year when the bugs are "almost" gone then might get it. I don't see a great advantage in improvements over XP. I still like Win95/98...less trouble than what I've had with XP.

Installing Vista
Feb 3, 2006 12:01AM PST

Not immediately. I am waiting to see other peoples experiences are first. I want to see the professional reviewer reactions and comments first. I also want to make sure that the drivers and my software is compatible with the new operating system. Additionally, I am extremely satisifies with Win XP Pro and I will wait until the promised WinXP SP3 is released in 2007.
Given the problems Microsoft has had in devolopment of Vista, I am not going to install it immediately. I am going to take a wait and see attitude.

I am not happy with Microsofts new system track record. I am one of the many OLD Mac (spoiled by plug it in and it works) users that had to convert or die in the business world. I have installed all the operating systems that Microsoft has produced from "98" to "XP Pro". The only one that has been at all seamless and reliable is 2K Pro. I would have included NT but it had a lot of peripheral hardware issues. 2K Pro is the system that is on all my computers for that reason. The old systems (98 to XP Pro) were pretty much based on the same chip set technology and were for the most part just upgrades of the previous system. If anyone says they didn't have problems with these old systems , they either;
1. are too young to know better (almost missed this one)
2. are delusional
3. have a great druggist, bartender, or both
4. have been beaten numb over the last two decades by Microsoft so everything now is a piece of cake (choke)
5. all of the above (most likely)
Vista is going to the next level of hardware as well as software compatibility. Given the system evolution track record, this could be a disaster.
With that in mind I'll wait another 10 years for a system to prove itself.

win2k
Feb 3, 2006 12:32AM PST

currently i use win2k, Xp is crap and a half, and has tons of errors that i encounter daily, it also had tons of removed features that where standard in WINDOWS 98, Plus, AND 2000,

the interface in XP is ugly and i recent using it at school,

In addition to all this while XP is built to be user friendly it excludes computer savy people by removing key features.

If vista is anything like XP i know i wont even touch it.

Vista OS
Feb 3, 2006 1:10AM PST

I'll be waiting until the reports from the IT media give it a clean bill of health and also list all the 'nasties' which Microsoft is sure to have slipped in.
I'm currently running XP SP1 !! YES I know, however I found out that SP2 trashes some useful facilities in Word 2003 in the name of security and I don't want to loose them just yet.
So I'll be waiting to see how Vista performs on this score.

Windows Vista
Feb 3, 2006 1:36AM PST

I will wait for at least 6 months to get a lot of the bugs shaken out!!!! I have Windows XP Pro right now, and it is very stable with minimal problems. Windows is never quite perfect, but what I have now is very tolerable.

I will build a new system when I get ready to go with Windows Vista. I don't want to buy HP, Dell, Sony, or any of the professionally produced computers. If you build your own, you can pay a little more, but get just exactly what you want. I have 2 gig of fast ram right now, and want at least that if not more. Some people might think that 2 gig is overkill, but it keeps the computer working much faster. I have an Intel 630 hyperthreading processor, and that makes me want a dual processor in my next machine.

Windows XP is far superior to any of the previous Windows systems, and hopefully Vista will be even better. The first months of Vista will likely be like most new products, and have quite a few idiosyncrasies that will be resolved after a few months.

I updated an old Gateway from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP, and that improved the reliability 100% That is a 1999 model and about ready to be put out to pasture when I get my new one up and running with Vista.

I believe that windows performance depends of your computer. I have some friends who say that windows doesnt work, but they have an old machine, with only 256MB Ram!!! How can windows work fine???

I also built my own pc.I have only 1GB DDR, but I got an AMD processor dual core, Athlon X2 4200, and I have no problems with XP.

I hope to install Vista as soon as I can. I know that Vista will be even better than XP!!!

Who needs Vista?
Feb 3, 2006 2:32AM PST

Microsoft has turned into nothing more then a very greedy software company. After hearing reports, Microsoft will no long support Windows 98, one would have to wonder how long it's going to be before they no longer support XP, so that you will have to run right out to buy Vista. In order to load XP one has to have a copy of Windows 95 then upgrade to Windows 98 then XP or buy the full version of XP. If 98 is no longer supported then that would only lead to buying the FULL version of XP or Vista($200).....are we again talking about an upgrade and full version? With all the sub-standard copies of 95 and 98, countless hours people took loading and reloading because of the "blue screen" and money already wasted on these past operating systems.....Mr Gates should give away a FULL VERSION OF VISTA TO ALL PREVIOUS OWNERS OF Microsofts substandard systems. Let's hope and pray Vista turns out to be sold at a much lower price then XP and only requires a FULL version and not shells of past older systems.

Not for some time!!

There is no way I will install the the Vista on my system until at least 2 years AFTER it out. Micro$oft has a real lousy track record! Look what happeded with XP. I will wait until they have all the large and small bugs out if it and more important..its not a feeding ground for the hacker sharks!!

I will be buying the new iMac in six months or so. If it is as good as its reviews, we will likely become an all Mac household. Even if it doesn't live up to recent kudos, I'll stick with XP for a few more years. After all, I've had XP for only 2 years and don't know all its ins and outs yet!

From what I have read about Vista It seems that microsoft (Bill Gates) has decided to force us to have new computers and censor what we say or do. "Big Brothers Father"

It is time to Boycot Microsoft and it's Domination
