I can qualify to get the "academic edition" of XP Pro Upgrade and save at least $50 over the full version. I'm running Win 98se now, and I have the Win 98se installation disk. My plan is to reformat my C: drive and start clean, but I've heard that if you use the upgrade disk XP will be installed over Win 98--with all of 98's flakiness. I've also heard that the XP Pro upgrade disk asks for the old OS disk only to make sure you have a previous Microsoft OS. My question is: Can you install XP Pro using the upgrade version onto a reformatted hard drive? (I just don't want to buy the upgrade and find out I have to buy a full version, too.)
