Will XP pro Upgrade Academic Edition install completely new OS?

I can qualify to get the "academic edition" of XP Pro Upgrade and save at least $50 over the full version. I'm running Win 98se now, and I have the Win 98se installation disk. My plan is to reformat my C: drive and start clean, but I've heard that if you use the upgrade disk XP will be installed over Win 98--with all of 98's flakiness. I've also heard that the XP Pro upgrade disk asks for the old OS disk only to make sure you have a previous Microsoft OS. My question is: Can you install XP Pro using the upgrade version onto a reformatted hard drive? (I just don't want to buy the upgrade and find out I have to buy a full version, too.)

Hi

Don't bother with upgrades to OS's, UNLESS the original OS is ok, with 98SE or 95 it's not so good. the best thing is to buy the fullversion of XP (either Home edition or Pro) and then do a complete clean install, you will have to check for security patches and the like afterwards though, but it's worth it.
