Will wireless adaptor work in Toshiba Satellite 4000?

Sep 18, 2004 10:11PM PDT

I have a Toshiba Satellite 4000cds/cdt series laptop
and would like to set it up to be wireless. It is running Windows 98 and has two pc slots. Will the wireless pc card adaptors on the market work on this computer?
Do I have to add anything else besides a wireless adaptor?

From a hardware only perspective and disregarding software issues, there is no issue here.

You will need a wireless access point or wireless router, but that's all noted at linksys.com and dlink.com web sites so there is no need to duplicate that here.

As to the laptop, if it's the factory OS install, the pc-card slot will just work.

Thanks for the response. I did try a Linksys adapter. Ran into some problems during installation. Tech support at Linksys had me check which version of Windows 98. According to tech support at Linksys the adapter will only work with Windows second edition or newere windows such as ME, 2000, or XP.

Another adapter at compgeeks (1 hour left) for 9 bucks and 1 penny. You have to check what version OS is supported since...

It matters.

The answer to your original question is yes. Such do work.

You can also get something like the Linksys USB wireless ethernet adapter to do this, and can easily move it from a laptop to a desktop if needed. I have used them with Win98 systems and they worked great.
