The iPhone and the iPhone 3G use GSM-based networks such as the networks operated by AT&T and T-Mobile. Unfortunately, in the U.S., you will need to use one of these networks to make use of the iPhone's cellular capabilities. Sprint and Verizon Wireless operate CDMA-based networks, which are not as common as GSM. The iPhone can't operate on these networks without a CDMA radio, one would think, so throwing in a CDMA SIM card won't do you a whole lot of good.

Now if Verizon had agreed to work with Apple, things may have been different. A CDMA iPhone should have worked on Sprint's network as well. But, Verizon did not jump onboard, so Apple went to AT&T (Cingular at the time). Since many companies around the world operate GSM networks, using GSM makes it easier for Apple to have a global presence, as they have now. For Apple, this was a good move. A CDMA iPhone would have been nice, but after working with Sprint's service, I don't think using one on their network would have been too great. AT&T's service has been very good for me. Well, good luck.

There is now a jailbreak for the iPhone or I should say an unlock for it to switch to nextel and sprint serch (how to unlock an iPhone to nextel) on YouTube for proof it will be the first one and then go to new96.com to find out how
