I've had AOL since 1997, and I've never had problems with software, viruses, modem issues etc.

This may be so, but you have had to do everything their way, use their key words, only receive what they want you to and watch the zillions of advertisements they stick in your face and by the way, pay their price. WRC

RE: truth about AOL
Jun 9, 2005 3:34PM PDT

I have used AOL for about 2 or 3 years now, started with ver. 7, went to 8 and now I am using 9. I have had no major difficulties with it, the only problem I had with AOL was my own doing (hardware prob after installing a NIC, was resolved). I am able to use external programs (IE, Firefox, MSN Messenger, AIM, etc.) with out a problem. There may be some modems that AOL does not support, but I am not aware of specific makes/models where this would be true. I have not had any viruses or spyware to speak of. In regards to sluggish performace, my computer has not slowed to a crawl.

"friends dont let friends use AOL"
Jul 21, 2005 1:56PM PDT

needless to say http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,15545,00.asp is old. It refers to AOL 5.0! As mentioned in my earlier post, I have been using AOL since version 7.0 on my Windows 2000 box at home. I have yet to see any changes to the DUN files/settings that would make it difficult or impossible for me to connect to another ISP if I were to so choose. I must conclude at this point by saying that AOL probably has made changes to my system that I am not aware of, but it has not prevented me from doing what I need to do on the system, nor have I seen that it is any different from other programs with regard to making changes to the system that the user is not aware of.

AOL always gets bashed.
Aug 9, 2005 8:52AM PDT

It's funny how often AOL does get bashed...sad really. But I've been using AOL since 1994, back when it was like version 2.5 or 3.0, and I've never really had problems with them. I just hate how their reps on the phone make it so unbelievably hard to cancel your account. AOL has done a few good things: AIM, and of course, chat rooms. I'd use AOL now but Dial Up just won't cut it anymore, and I'm not paying more just to be able to use it with broadband.
