But let's cover the scenario where you install Office 2007. Today, it will (on XP SP3 no less) get updated to whatever was issued to date. But the article pretty much closes the book on fixes and more updates.

With the upcoming end of support for Windows XP and Office 2003, my question is this: Will Office 2007 (and higher) still receive security updates when running on Windows XP? If so, I may just want to take a chance and connect to the internet on Patch Tuesday, making sure my A/V and firewall are updated.

Even if it did, part of a Windows version going EOL means MS won't bother making sure that their programs work properly with it. So sooner or later you'd probably find this or that update broke something and MS would be even less receptive than usual about fixing it.
Life was better before sliced bread.
And I tell them that life was bad back then too, it was just bad in different ways.
If I were to wax a bit philosophical... If everyone clinging white-knuckled to their copies of XP was adept enough to be able to avoid most sources of problems once support ends, I'd have no problems letting them be happy in their neo-luddite ways until their computer's finally gave up the ghost and repair parts were either too expensive or simply unavailable. However, such is not the case. Most people still using XP are barely computer literate and routinely blunder into all kinds of malware. Which affects me when someone turns their computer into an open mail relay for pumping out spam that clogs up my inbox or starts running probes for open ports on my system or launches a DDoS attack on some site I want to be able to get to. If it affected only the idiots still using it, I'd say let them do whatever they want, but when it starts affecting me, that's when I get annoyed and start fantasizing about taking my trusty 15lbs sledge hammer to their computer if they won't go willingly to something else.
