Will I need an optical cable with this setup?

by tyleary / December 4, 2008 6:25 AM PST

Hi, first time on the forum. I've just purchased a bunch of home theater stuff on amazon and am now trying to figure out connections. So far I've just been using the TV speakers, so current setup is:

Dish Vip722 satellite receiver, HDMI cable to
Sony STR-DG920 A/V receiver, then HDMI cable to
Sony 46z4100 HDTV.

The Sony A/V receiver has four HDMI inputs and one out, so I also connect a DVD player through the receiver. Note that I'm running everything directly to the A/V receiver first and not the TV. This has worked fine for just using TV speakers.

However, I'm now ordering speakers and a subwoofer to do 5.1 surround. I keep reading reviews on amazon and it seems most people do not set things up this way, but rather run their satellite directly to the TV and then run optical cable out to the A/V for audio. Since HDMI carries the audio and it's already running through my receiver, will this Sony receiver decode it and pass the video on, or do I actually need to order an optical cable to go BACK to the receiver from my TV?

I hope that question makes sense, this is all pretty new to me.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
