Will DVD/HardDrive recorders handle HDTV?

Jul 27, 2004 9:04AM PDT

I have been impressed with DVD/Harddrive recorders, but have not seen anything about their ability to handle HDTV. Do they record HDTV? Are they capable of doing this with upgrade? With HDTV so close to being "officially rolled out", why is no one talking about this????

No. But there but there are 2 new competing HD DVD formats currently being developed by Toshiba and Sony. Should be rolling out about 3rd qtr '05.

So DVDs,TV signals, and cable and satellite are only just beginning to offer signals capable of producing HDTV signals ?? So what fraction of video items available are capable of HDTV? 10% ? 25% ? Are all these things due to be ready on the government's switchover timetable? What year will that be?

Right now the only way to record HDTV on a hard drive is to use a PC with a HDTV tuner card. The downside is it can only be watched on the PC.

Not necessarily true (about only watching on PC)

My guess is, that if you can output DVI from your computer, and you have a DVI compatible input on your HDTV compatible TV or projector (like I have on my Panasonic projector), then you can display it to your HDTV TV from the PC.
