Question

Will an optical mini plug work with an analog input?

by kaitxo / October 20, 2011 3:31 AM PDT

I have an LG 47LW5600 which only has a digital audio optical output. I would like to connect my Harman Kardan soundsticks to the tv. The soundsticks have a 3.5mm analog stereo input. Can I use a Toslink-to-Optical Mini Plug Digital Cable (http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-27017-Velocity-Toslink/dp/B0002JFN1K/ref=cm_srch_res_rtr_1) to connect these? Do I need to use a converter? Basically, what do I need to get these working together? Thanks in advance!

I don't believe so, but YMMV

In this case I believe the HK sound sticks would have to function like on of the older Sony MD player/recorders. They would have to be able to detect/accept either analog or digital content via a digital optical input. The sound sticks are using straight old-school analog inputs unfortunately. Granted, I'm running on only a couple hours of sleep today (LOL), but I believe you require a D/A converter in-between for this to work. I am not 100% certain though.

Nope.

Definitely no. You're gonna need a receiver/amp with optical audio input and analog speaker output.
