Question

Will a usb wireless adapter fix desktop internet problem?

Aug 29, 2011 1:15AM PDT

Hi,

I had some type of nasty virus on my desktop, I had to use a boot cd to clean things up and since then I can't get online with my desktop. I believe it's a winsock issues and I've downloaded all kinds of fixes from online to no avail. I'm not super technical but I've tried every fix I can. Will a usb wirless adapter bypass this problem? I have windows xp service pack 2. Thanks!

Answer
Not a sure fix.

Today's malware can do deep damage. But why isn't this XP up to the latest patches? Those patches contain many fixes against many exploits. Without those patches, the machine and OS get exploited again.

My thoughts on this.

1. Read and do -> 7726-6132_102-5098912.html?tag=posts;msg5099421
2. Get your files safe in case you have to reload the OS. Remember that XP can't always be fixed. I've seen it fixed often but so far it takes a guru from MSFT at your keyboard.

3. After your files are safe. Get all the patches installed.

Still can't access internet
Aug 29, 2011 12:26PM PDT

Hi Bob,

Thanks very much for your suggestions. The computer now seems free from malware, spybot, spyware doctor are both showing the pc clean but still can't get only and the xp diagnostic is still calling for a winsock reset, I've downloaded and used the winsock reset tool but nothing is working.

As regards my original question, would a usb wireless adapter bypass my internet issue and allow me to connect my pc wirelessly or would I still encounter the same winsock problem? Any other ideas? Many thanks.

Spybot?

That teatimer is now in conflict with many apps. Remove that, rerun the scans and then google XP NETSH RESET to try again.

Removed Spybot, still not success
Aug 29, 2011 11:12PM PDT

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the further guidance. I removed Spybot, reran Malware Bytes and superantispyware and nothing was detected then then used the Microsoft Fixit program for NETSH RESET but still can't get on the internet. I'm still getting the same error message about there being a Winsock proglem and the need for a reset when I run the network connection diagnostic. I'm going to try a usb wireless adapter as a last resort. Unfortunately I don't have XP on disc so I can't reload it. If the USB wireless adapter doesn't work I guess I'll have to back up my important files and then just get a new computer unless there is anything else that might be tried. Everything on the computer seems fine except for the lack of internet access.

With no XP CD, repairs are unlikely.

The other repair of SFC SCANNOW (see google for how) requires the CD. It's like having a spare time (with air!) and all the tools to change the tire. Can't go for long without that spare.

Hi Bob

The reason I don't have the XP cd is that I bought an emachine that did not come with a seperate XP cd. I did have the option of creating recovery dvd's or cd's but did not do it. Assuming that I can still create those, will those have a clean OS or will they simply copy whatever problems I now have that are preventing me from going online? Also, if I am able to create those recovery dvd's, are they only meant for a complete reload or could I use those for things like SFC SCANNOW if it requires the CD?

Try that !

Make the recovery CDs then you can try the SFC SCANNOW command (see google for exact syntax.)

As to your question, I've had some luck using those CDs with SFC. HOWEVER with makers not having much standardized you only know if you try.

At least you can bail out of SFC without much trouble. At worst you'll have to reload from said CDs but my experience is that's rare.

Is an external a good bypass?
Aug 29, 2011 1:46PM PDT

Yes, it should do the trick. Keep in mind, that the newest of these will need a stronger computer set up, & the older ones are being phased out. If it says for XP, you're golden. If it says for Vista, you're safe. Also, you may have to update the software for it from Cisco (what a pain), as it doesn't like SP-3.
I got all of the updates before re-formatting my drive. So after the format & update to SP-3, I updated all of the drivers & software, so Linksys was ready to handle the connection.

I'm still using XP SP-3 & connecting via usb (Linksys) is frustrating daily. This is because the software is so out of date. I had the same problem before switching to XP, from ME. Just to note

I will try external bypass
Aug 29, 2011 11:17PM PDT

Hi Firhcarr,

Thanks for your comment. I'm going to try the external usb wirelss bypass since nothing else seems to be working. It seeems like the pc is completely free from malware now but for some reason the winsock issue remains. I'll let you know if it works, will be recieving the usb wireless adapter on Thursday.

My guesses.

1. The install of the external USB wireless will work, but won''t help to solve the issue.
2. The install of the external USB wireless will ask for the XP CD you don't have.

Let's hope I'm wrong on all two!
