will a usb 3.0 pci card work

Mar 23, 2016 2:26PM PDT

i currently have usb 2.0 in all ports, its very slow for file trasfers and since i mainly use my pc for media(movies+music) and sum light gaming its irritating waiting 8mins for a 1.5gb movie to transfer to flash drives so can i put a usb 3.0 pci card in my pc and will it be faster

Should work. But check the suported OSes before you buy.

As to speed, depends on the device. I found it to be faster but not twice as fast on my USB 3.0 sticks. Still, faster.

Usb card

The first thing you'll need is a low profile card and bracket.
Otherwise it won't fit in your case.

If the only thing you will "ever" plug in to this card is a flash stick I doubt you will need extra input power.

Look at your psu and see if there are any spare power cables.
If not and you go with a card that needs a power cable you will have to get a splitter.

Answer
It should work but...

not the 10X we expected, maybe 2-3X is more like it. Of course internal rack or eSATA maybe lot faster but then it's less widely use.

but like Rob said, you probably won't quite reach that.

It's way more than that. But if you get 2x you did well.

"The now-aging USB 2.0 standard can theoretically transfer data at a very high 480 megabits per second (mbps), or 60 megabytes per second (MBps). That's impressive, but not as much as the newer USB 3.0, which can handle up to 5gbps (640MBps)—over ten times as fast as the 2.0 maximum.Jun 26, 2014" - The Internets.
