Will a router interfere with online multiplayer gaming?

Jul 5, 2007 1:38AM PDT

We have two computers and two internet connections, one cable and one DSL. We're contemplating going to just the cable internet for both computers. Is there a way to hook up the router to the primary gaming computer without interfering with any of the online computer games? In the past, there have been problems when those with wireless connections try to connect to a game.

Ok. . .

Connect the router to the modem, then each PC to the router either wired or wireless. The wired PC will have faster throughput because wired is faster than wireless. Each PC will share the pipe. If you want full use of the pipe with each PC you'll need two pipes.

wired vs wireless

The second computer is on a different floor so I'm assuming we'd go wireless with that? The gaming computer we'd wire.

one more question

If one computer is wired and the other wireless, does that mean that we'd use a splitter with one part going to the gaming computer and the other to the router?

No splitter. . .

You cannot use a splitter. Connect the wired PC to the router and the router to the modem. Use the router's wireless connection to the other PC.

Modem --> Router --> wired PC. Wireless PC will connect to the router wirelessly.

We haven't gotten that far yet. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to proceed.

"Is there a way to hook up the router to the primary gaming computer without interfering with any of the online computer games?"

And NO! to that question. There is no perfect solution that will work for every game. But most games will be fine. I'm sure some will want a perfect solution but it hasn't been made yet.

"In the past, there have been problems when those with wireless connections try to connect to a game."

Nothing has changed here. If you find such a game you have to work with it's maker to figure it out.
