I would like to know what this is and how did I get it.

Compaq or HP computer, relatively new, it came with it. That is the driver that comes with a number of the games that come with those computers. Spybot classifies is as spyware but I chose to have Spybot ignore it months ago because I play the games occasionally and I have had no problems whatsoever with it. I also know a number of people that uninstalled it and had problems with other applications afterwords.

It comes with HP & Compac computers. If you remove it, you will have problems with some programs. If you have it keep it.

to play some Macromedia Shockwave games.

But unlike Roddy, I decided not to allow it to install as I wasn't too happy about their UELA and privacy policy.

however this was a year or so back, and they may be better now, and I take note that Roddy says he hasn't had any issues with them.

i do have some wild tangent games, but thought this driver was diffent than the one used for them. I had not noticed it in my add/remove programs until after my daughter had installed limewire. (bad news)

You are Welcome Becca and
Dec 29, 2004 7:00AM PST

you are also correct about Limewire. Just for your info, I don't remember if you mentioned your operating system but if it is XP, there is a patch that has to be installed BEFORE updating to SP2 for that driver along with some other patches for other things that came on the newer computers that can be obtained free from HP if you have either an HP or Compaq computer. That is just for your future reference.

YOUR WELCOME
Dec 29, 2004 8:16AM PST

I also deleted I think it was called CDAENGINE0400.DLL.
I think I need it back. I liked Smiley Central and accidently deleted it. I can't get it to download or install. Would that have anything to do with it? I deleted the cdaengine because I kept getting a message saying Rundll32 was causing error in cdaengine0400.dll. I think I really messed some things up.

simley central issue
Dec 30, 2004 10:39PM PST

becca to be more exact simly central uses a still of trogan that places a cookie to allow it to hijack your computer. it is very very bad news, you are now going to have to edit your registry, i would advise you to install spybot s&d, it can be found at www.cnet.com afteryou down load it and update, then run spybot i would bet a bottom dollar that now you have a dso exploit issue. if you do, you need to click on the plus sign next to DSO EXPLOIT, then print the results. here are the instructions on how to remove from the rgistry:

step one: print your spybot s&d report, locate the the dso, mine was:

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1614895754-7235345543-500\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=w=3

click on start, run, and type in REGEDIT and press ENTER to open the windows registry editor

find the location of the exploit in the reg. by clicking on the pluses(+) next to each title

after opening the Zones section and clicking on '0' look to the right window, under name is the key '1004'and the type is 'REG_SZ' simply right click nad delete the REG_SZ value. then tight click on any open space in the window and create a new-->DWORD Value for the key(in this case 1004), then right click on 1004 and click on MODIFY make sure the hexamil box has a dot in it change the hex to "3"

close the reg. and reboot your computer

the dso exploit should now be removed and it should no longer appear in the spybot search and distroy log as a problem.

remember however that this will need to be done for all your exploits.

it worked for me and i assume no responsibilty for anyone who might mess up their REG.

good luck and happy new years, if still in doubt do a google search under DSO exploits

becca if you have any problems please feel free to contact me at DINO@madpromos.net. good luck and happy new year

Easier fix for DSO exploit
Dec 30, 2004 11:13PM PST

without going into the registry. That is a bug in Spybot. There has been a beta fix released for it. Just download it on top of your current version. It will change your version to 1.3.1TX After you download it, run Spybot S&D, let it fix the exploit, then reboot and run it again. It should be gone, if not, just put it into ignore until Spybot comes out with a permanent fix for it which should be soon. I'm not sure if the rebooting is totally necessary but it seems to work better that way.

Dec 30, 2004 11:23PM PST

well roddy, im not one to argue, however i had to fix a buds computer at 7 pm last night, i downloaded spybot last night and did the update, it still did not fix it, i was just letting her know how to fix it herself, afterall if you remove it yourself you know its gone, i also read that xp ser pack 2 states that although the dso exploit is there that its really not there, if your viruses are up to date and you have the sp2 updated, i think it was@ microsoft.com is where io read it. food for thought

true but
Dec 30, 2004 11:36PM PST

I don't know why the fix didn't work for you, it does for most people. Your advice is very good but I try never to tell people to go into the registry unless they are comfortable in doing that and also know how to make a backup of the registry. For the same reason, I don't tell people to use HijackThis unless they are going to a HijackThis Forum. Either of those things can cause damage unless used by an experienced person and there are too many people that DON'T follow directions LOL. . BTW, Spybot has a new version 1.4 but it's a Beta but I would imagine the final should be out soon so keep an eye out for the notice in the virus and securities forum. Happy New Year. Grin

try twice
Jan 3, 2005 2:43AM PST

I did this & after rebooting spybot found dso exploit again so I thought it hadn't worked too, but when I ran spybot again it din't find dso exploit.

don't know if this is useful.
good luck, Jeff

Dec 30, 2004 11:58PM PST

it was only to explain how i fixed mine, by all means if she isnt comf. with the regedit, dont do it, fear is the reason most people dont learn, sometimnes you learn through trial and error, i usually learn the better approach after ui make the mistake<(HEHEHE) im hardheaded that way. but my approach wasnt that scary, just a bit detailed, when i want to change the cam in my car i put it in myself, not gonna let a mech do it and do it wrong, hell i can do that!lol
as i posted, the fix was the way i did it for mine thats all.we friends?

usually be removed from add/remove programs but if you can't get rid of it, I would suggest posting in the Virus and Securities forum and Marianna and Donna have had plenty of experience with that. Also, Merlin, who created cwshredder has come out with a new tool that is an itty bitty Task Manager to be used in emergencies if a virus or whatever disables the Task Manager which, if you click the box on the top right side of the unit, it shows some of the dlls. You can get that here.
