Wii is not as much of a revoltion as said

Nov 6, 2006 8:30AM PST

Nintendo has been advertising its new console the wii as the innovative video game system ever. But, they designed a new console that is barely as powerful as the ps2, is $100 more expensive, cannot play blu-ray, Hd-dvd, or regular dvd's, And does not have a hard disk, but ''boasts'' 512 MB of internal flash memory. 512 MB is about enough to store 10 minutes of hd video, not to mention the wii can't play any HD whatsoever. And, the functionality of their new remote is somewhat limited, As you can only maintain 1 point of contact at a time.

They should have took the time to make a system that was as powerful as both the playstation3 and the xbox 360. When the nintendo wii is released on november 19, two days after the ps3 release, it is going to get left in the dust of this powerful console. Nintendo also has been ranting and raving about ''wiiconnect24''. But this service will probably be poor compared to both xbox live and even sony's new service. And if it is always connected to the internet, it is never truly turned off. It always consumes enough power to stay connected to the internet. this can contibute up to a couple of dollars to you bill in a month, around $20 per year.

And don't get me wrong, the wii does come with wifi, but it is not a standard format and therefore it is slower than g and the new n, can only communicate with nintendo's portable the DS. with the wii, there are no options. there is one sytem and that is all you can get. At least with the xbox360 and ps3 you can choose a price that fits your budget. No matter how many ways you cut the cake, you get a console that is no better than its predecessor. Nintendo needs to think about not trying to please everyone with their lineup and only make two or three systems. they cannot get enough fans on any one system because their customers are spread out over four different systems.

The ps3 on the other hand, instead of investing in old technology, has totally rebuilt their system from the ground up, to make a video, audio, and overall gaming experience that is amazing and fun. The ps3 clocks in at 3.2 gigaherhz, while the wii is somewhere around a measely 400 Mhz. Again unlike the wii, the ps3 comes with either a 20 GB or a 60 GB hard drive, enough space to store all of you media in one place. The playstation 3 also shows promise of useful connectivity with its portable conterpart, the psp. Sony demonstrated the psp could be used as a rearview mirror in one of the racing titles for the console. the ds can connect with the wii, but nintendo hasn't domestrated that you can get anything out of it.

Within a year of its release, the wii will be old technology. A good value is something you don't have to re-invest in every year. Thats why I am putting my money with sony.

Is it really important for the Nintendo Wii to employ WELL PROVEN age old technology like DVD playback? My cereal boxes have dvd playback anymore. I DON'T NEED MORE DVD PLAYBACK.

Now if Nintendo were smart, they would make the Wii a Blue Ray Disc pimp, and make the thing cost at the minimum of 300 dollars more. Lord God knows we need our video game systems to play our movies too. I mean, buying a video game system for the purpose of playing video games? You Nintendo Fanboys make me sick.

well to buy a ps3 you have to spend $600 (if you want the good one) and if you wanna play with people you have to buy controllers also.(WITHOUT RUMBLE!)

Holy crap, man. You have no idea what you are saying.

"A few other miscellaneous things"?

Oh, boy. You sir, are a genius of EPIC proportions. Let's go over that first post to begin.

"$100 more expensive [than the PS2]...." Did it occur to you that, firstly, the PS2 is 6 years old and was $50 more expensive than the Wii at launch, and, secondly, the BASIC PS3 is $200 more expensive than THAT?

"...'boasts' 512 MB of internal flash memory." Um...and? Why does the PS3 have a hard drive anyway? What's the point of even buying discs, then, if your magical Sony could just send games to your PlayStationComputerBox through the series of tubes that comprises the intarweb? Christ Almighty, have your arms atrophied so much that you can't handle schlepping some DVDs around anymore?

"1 point of contact"? What does that even MEAN? You point it somewhere at the screen and the Wii reads your mind in order to split it into two separate points that you're thinking of? Nope, sorry, the Wii can't do that. Unless, of course, you're making some sort of joke about the fact that the Wiimote and Nunchuk sense motion separately--in which case you're just stupid.

And the "$20 per year" to keep the Wii connected to the Internet--it's been explained to you that you're an idiot and that that figure is wildly inaccurate, but just to further humiliate you--Xbox Live Gold is $50 a year, Einstein.

"there is one sytem [sic] and that is all you can get. At least with the xbox360 and ps3 you can choose a price that fits your budget."

...PAH HAH! In what way do either of those fit a budget compared to a Wii, THE CHEAPEST ONE?

Ooh, well, I'll give you that one--the Wii does have a much slower processor than the PS3.
Oh, wait, anyone remember what that means? Oh, yeah--it means that Sony has tried to make their CONSOLE'S graphics look better than those on a PC, only to waste electricity. LOTS of electricity.

And then your stupid PSP-is-better-than-DS crap. The PSP can be used as a rear mirror? OH NOES, THE DS IS DEAD. Hold on a tick, you can just press a single freakin' button to look behind you. I sure would enjoy the daunting task of figuring out just where the crap to mount a PSP, though.

Oh, one more thing here: "A good value is something you don't have to re-invest in every year." Hmm...you sure do seem to know a lot about Sony. Maybe you could remind what one of their leading titles is...uh...Oh! Final Fantasy, how many of those are we up to now?

So, on to your latest lies.

So, yeah, pretty much every new game in the last generation of systems cost $50 also. Stop whining.

If you had done any research, you'd realize that each Wii comes with the same bundle on launch day: a Wiimote and a Nunchuk, among other things. Crap, if I wanted another pair, why not just buy TWO WIIS instead of a PS3 and save myself a penny?

"so, if you are really into the wii, you can spend a lot more than the originally intended $250 plus tax."
No.

"a reason the wii is so inexpensive is because it is using well proven technology that has been adopted by the consumer, making those parts cheaper to manufacture."
what.

"Some say that the wii is not meant to be a dvd player, but a game system. My playstation 2 was the only way my family had to play dvd's for 6 years. It was very cheap, comparatively, because instead of buying a PS2 and a DVD player, my family only had to buy a PS2 for $300 (back then a dvd player cost around $300 also)."
Sad story, don't care; and finally:

"nintendo has been using dvd drives for nearly 7 years now, but still hasn't included the software in their systems reaquired to play the discs."
5 years. And they were miniDVDs, not enough to hold movies, but--Oh! Would you look at that--just enough to hold a game.

Wii and how noob you are
Nov 16, 2006 6:38AM PST

ok dude look...
you made ur account the same day that you posted your forum. that concludes my decision that you are a gaming noob

also

the Wii comes with a Nunchuck which is a wireless/motionsensor controller that picks up any movement, axis etc.. It looks just like the Japanease weapon. That means that games made for the Wii have interfaces like for example, the new Zelda game (im not sure of the name, princess something). In the Zelda game, in order to shoot his bow, you need to take the Nunchuck and pretend like you are reaching into your quiver and then agian pretend like your putting the arrow on the string. Then you pretend like your pulling it back and then you let go. And a arrow flies in the game striking the aimed target.
To aim your bow, you use the Nunchuck that you don't use when you reach for an arrow, pull the string back and so on, you use the one that acts like the bow stalk to aim, if you move it to the left, your target circle moves to the left at the same speed as the Nunchuck moved. Same result for the right, up, down and any angle that you can think of. I know for sure that i am going to snap a Wii on release date. Oh and also the PS3 didn't focus on the gaming part, they were working on DVD playing. Thats why i bought a 100 dollar DVD played! The Wii wants people to enjoy GAMING! My case is closed

oh my name (wii-will-rule-the-world) is true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im sure that nobody will read this becuase im like number 36 or so. Hey thats a big number for a forum...another point.

You sir, need to learn how to reasearch. IGN.com is recommended.

Yeah, really late post, but I NEED to take part in this funny conversation.

Graphics? Sony and Microsoft are going to take a pretty bug hit if they believe that graphics are what make the machine. Making things better isn't going to win. Making NEW things that ARE better will. I have 2 examples.. 1 game world based, and another real world based.

Game world: Let's look at pong. It's controlls were simple: just a knob that you turn. Now let's see Sony turn up the graphics. Hey look, they added a background, high-defenition detailed paddles, and OH LOOK! A colorful ball! How do you play? Same as always... turn the knob, block the ball. What would nintendo do. What's this? Another knob? You can move the paddle horizontaly, maybe whacking the hell out of the other paddle while your at it. Totally new game play.
What about the pricing part of it. Would you rather pay 4 quarters to play the HD pong game Sony created, or just 25 cents to play with the new controls that opens up a whole new world of gameplay? I pick Nintendo's.

(HAHA that part is so hard to understand, I know it. Please dont' flame me because of that lol.)

Real world example: Middle-Ages war.

2 armies: Sony and Nintendo. Each starts with 100 men. What does Nintendo do? It splits in two and runs up the hills on either sides of the army. Now Sony starts running up those hills. Nintendo has it much easier, simply shooting away at them (arrows) while they tire themselves out. Sony is loosing, so what does it do? Sends in more reinforcements. By the thousands! Nintendo holds it's ground, killing about 7,000 Sony militants untill finally Sony manages to kill off the 100 Nintendo people. Now what? Nintendo invents the bomber airplane (lol). It sends it over the hills and bombs the crap out of the sony militants. Sony responds by sending in the same reinforcements... ground soilders. Millions of them this time. But still, they are somehow unable to reach the bombers, and they lose all of their army.

Nintendo won the battle with only 150 soilders, and lost only 100. Sony lost all 4,123,564 soilders they sent in.

See, Sony battled with power, similar to the PS3 and it's buffed up state. But, no real changes were made. More graphics (soilders) and power (more soilders) are all that were added. Nintendo was smart. It used a good marketing strategy (running up the hill for a good start) to get people interested. That lasted for a good long while, untill there was so much graphics power that they lost grip for a while. Then, a simple revolution which is the controller (Bomber airplanes). They completly dominated, because no matter how much graphics Sony stuffed in, it couldn't do anything about it.

Of course, this is overexagerated. Sony would get a new feature here and there to give it the edge, but the point is that Nintendo is always making new things when needed, which gives it the edge.

I'm hoping that the second example is a little more understandable. I'm expecting "WDF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT"s and "ARE YOU RETARTED?"s coming at me, but that's either because you don't want to understand, or you can't. (No offence, it could be my fault. It makes sence to me anyway).

Meh, that's all i got to say. Hopefully it could change people's minds.

How crazy is is that Nintendo is selling damn near double what MS and Sony are 6 months after launch? People that doubted the Wii sure do look pretty ridiculous.. haha

You do realize that you can't go off of straight number of consoles sold since every console is a different price. Anyone who thought the Wii wouldn't sell more consoles per month than the 360 or PS3 cannot understand basic economics and statistics.

A $250 console will sell more units than a $400 or $600 console.

I have a Wii and a 360 and I had a blast playing the new Zelda on the Wii, but after I beat it I got bored with it. I'm sorry but I don't get excited over Pokemon, Rayman, or whatever else is out there for the kids.

Mario Galaxy needs to come out...until then I'll be playing Gears of War, C&C:3 and Halo 3 come September. (MS has the best games right now and will for the rest of the year).

"A $250 console will sell more units than a $400 or $600 console"

Your statement would only hold true if everything else were equal. A $250 PS3 would sell more than a $600 PS3 but you can't compare a Wii to a X360 nor PS3. Heck ... you can't compare a PS3 to a X360. They are not equal.

With your logic ... a 99C cheeseburger sells more than a $2 to $3 IN-n-Out burger (animal style) and if you've been following the industry, you would notice that sales per store at an average McDonalds restaurant are lower than your In-n-Out joint.

Anyways, just pointing out that the PS3 problems run deeper than a price tag. It sure doesn't help that it sells for $600 but if you can convince people that they're getting a lot more than what your paying, the mass will follow. Don't believe me ... just look at all the girls that but $1000 purses.

Wii vs. PS3 vs. 360
Jun 19, 2007 3:30AM PDT

The Wii is definitely aimed at a different market than the PS3 and 360, but I'd disagree with you that you can't compare the three systems.

However, arguing over which system is better is kind of pointless as "better" is totally subjective.

And I do think the 360 and PS3 are going after the same hardcore gamers, so comparisons between those 2 systems are a bit more relevant than comparisons of either of them with the Wii. I'd bet that a lot more people end up owning both a Wii and a PS3 or a Wii and a 360 as opposed to owning both a 360 and a PS3. I'd further argue that since the trend of video game producers is to make games their games available for both thew 360 and the PS3 as opposed to being system exclusive in order to control costs, that owning both the PS3 and the 360 might be rather redundant in the near future- i.e., why buy both systems when 75% of all games released (that % is just a guess on my part) are available on both systems.

Personally, price was a huge deciding factor for me when buying my first nextgen console. I hadn't owned a Nintendo console since the SNES and the only reason I bought a Wii was because of the price and because of the unique controllers (which I thought I would hate before actually giving them a try). I'm pretty happy with the Wii so far, but do plan on getting either a 360 or a PS3 once the inevitable price drops occur. Which one I get will depend on the software libraries available at that time- if all things are equal I'll probably opt for the PS3 since it has some compatibility with my PSP, but if I were forced to make a decision today I'd go with a 360 based on the lower price and current games that are available.

Well taking products in the $250 to $600 range and using an analogy that consists of 99 cent and $3 burgers is a bit of a stretch.

First off, ALOT of videogame console sales are made by parents of kids. Little Timmy wants a new videogame console for Christmas so should parents spend $600 and get him a PS3 and return the gifts they got eachother to afford it OR should they get lil Timmy a Wii for $250, make him happy, and not break the bank?

This was obvious for last Christmas where PS3s were collecting dust on the shelves of my local Target and Best Buy while Wiis were almost impossible to find.

Bottom line is that if you want to compare how well each company is doing, you have to compare revenue and not units sold. That is like saying a Kia Rio is a better car than a Lexus LS because it sold 200,000 more units last year.

Agree and Disagree
Jun 19, 2007 9:55AM PDT

I mostly agree with the two last posts ... the burger comparison is a bit of a stretch.

My point was that price is only one of many reasons why the Wii outsells the PS3. I know many people have chosen a Wii because it's more affordable than the PS3 - parents included. On the other hand, and lets be honest, how many people would buy a Wii if the controllers were like the PS3 controllers but kept the same graphics?

If price was the only issue ... the Gamecube would've outsold the PS2 and X-box ... oh ... and the Dreamcast might've lived a longer shelflife.

There are many other factors that are making the Wii outsell the PS3: unique controls, unique games, accessible to newcomers and refreshing to hardcore gamers ... and, without a doubt, price.

But lets face it ... if little Timmy didn't want a Wii to begin with ... he would be getting a PS3 or X360 sooner or later ... maybe later when the price goes down. But because liitle Timmy wants a Wii, because of what it has to offer, then it makes sense to buy a Wii instead of a PS3 or X360.

Like I said ... I agree and disagree.

=)
