Wii, games & regret

May 1, 2007 4:55PM PDT

does anyone else own a Wii and just feel dissapointed. like there was just so much looking forward to, and not so much fun afterward. i stood in line for eight hours in the mountains, in november to get my Wii. it was cold, it was miserable, and i found myself lacking satisfaction a month or so later. Sure i bought Twilight princess and i loved it, but then its over and what do i have left?
Elebits? - kinda fun... for five minutes; Wii sports - even if you don't mind looking like a ******* playing it it is still no that fun.
All the games currently out for Wii just are REALLY not doing it for me. and all the games that do look fun like; RE:umbrella chronicles, Mario galaxy, Smash brothers, Project hammer, Disaster:DOC. all these games advertized for two years now and still most don't have release dates.
is it just me or is the Wii just full of campy, childish, family, and really just lame games? or is everyone finding these as fun as others?

That's how it always is

The first round of games for any console are usually crap almost by definition. It's brand new, developers haven't fully figured out how to use it yet. This is only compounded by the innovative controller scheme Nintendo used with the Wii.

It's the price you pay for being an early adopter. Xbox 360 owners who stood in line for it's release had a selection of around 6 games at launch. PlayStation 3 owners are faced with a similar problem. Game development takes a long time... Quality games take even longer. You're just going to have to be patient. The Wii has full GameCube back compatibility, a first for Nintendo consoles, so you could buy some of the old GameCube games you maybe never played, or that have recently come out.

Good way of putting it. I want to get the Wii just for:
Twilight Princess, even though I already have it and have beaten it. I just want a change and the controls are cooler with the Wii version, I think
Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi II: I'm not much of a DBZ fan anymore (mostly at the end of regular Z I liked it still), but COME ON!! This game has really good graphics, special controls, and over 250 characters! That makes a good game. X-Play gave it a 4/5, and that's really rare for an anime game
Warioware: Smooth Moves: This game IS fun. My cousin has a Wii, and brought it to the 'party' on Easter. That's the only Wii game we played. The rest of the time we spent trying to get it updated to download games off of the Virtual Console from the neighbor's Wi-Fi. The game has fun controls, you get to laugh AT the person playing (because they look like a ******) and there are over 200 mini games. That is ANOTHER one of Nintendo's great games.

In your same situation
May 2, 2007 12:15AM PDT

I have a Wii and loved the new Zelda but after I beat it (finally) I felt like there was nothing left to do on the Wii except play Starfox 64 and DK Country a few times.

Mario Party 8 comes out later this month and I bet that will be sweet. I have occupied myself by making a ton of Mii's that look like celebrities or cartoon characters though lol.

On that note, can Nintendo please let us download an update for the Mii creator that gives us more options like hats, colors, body types, etc? Also, the only game I know of where you can play as a Mii is WiiSports. I want more Mii supporting games.

Miis in Hyrule?
May 3, 2007 5:31AM PDT

I heard that at Nintendo, after Twilight Princess was finished, they decided to see what Miis would look like walking around in Hyrule. Maybe there'll be an update for Twilight Princess that let you do that?

OMG I totally agree
May 2, 2007 4:52AM PDT

I thought it was just me. Or that I was getting old, and developing A.D.D. or something. I've TOTALLY lost interest in my Nintendo system as well. Sure it was pretty fun during the first month or two, finishing Zelda (that was an "okay" game for me), and then just playing a wack of Wii Sports, specifically all the tennis and bowling challenges.

I think it's just like a movie that's been over-hyped. After you go see it, you can't help but feel a little disappointed afterwards.

I've bought all the stupid "highly-rated" games Gamespot recommended, like Trauma Centre (what a waste of $50), Wario Wares (fun for about 3 hours), and now Super Paper Mario (it's not an 8.8 Gamespot, unless you're 10 years old!?). It's true I've logged in a tonne of hours on Tiger Woods golf, and Madden, but it seems like I'm just going through the motions, and not really saying to myself "WOW.. I'm totally addicted to this game... like I was with FF7.. or Metal Gear Solid on PS1".

I think I'm going to stick to the more adult games like RE from now on, cuz I think I'm getting to old for the Wii.

And I don't even want to get into it about the sub-par graphics.

Right now... I think I'd be happier if I picked up a 360 and GOW during that cold, early, November (or was it December?) morning.

Completely Agree!
May 3, 2007 4:25AM PDT

I have had my Wii since December, and granted - I don't get to play it much. (1-3 hours a week). Once I finally beat Zelda, I tried monkey ball and super paper mario because of the reviews on gamestop.com. Monkey ball is a joke and super paper mario should have a rating of 10 and UNDER, not 10 and OVER.

I find myself skipping all the annoying "speech text" in the Paper Mario, and trying to complete it ASAP, so I can hopefully have more luck/fun with another game. But the more I play the Wii, the more I think about going out and getting a 360/PS3. I miss the mature rated games like God of War with amazing story lines and beautiful cut scenes that come with the game play. The silly kiddy graphics for the Wii are cute, but it just isn't entertaining for me at all. FYI - 23 yr old male.

games that heave gotten my attention
May 4, 2007 5:00PM PDT

recently i have found myself driven back to the more mature ones.
like Gears of war and lost planet was even fun. im even branching out to pc games like titan quest to get that Diablo 2 monkey off my back. i really wish that at least resident evil would come out and more game would take advantage of the beautiful FPS advantage the Wii has. or else im going to have to start doing yard work for fun. because really i played a lot of games for the wii and 1-2 were fun.
elebits: 15 minutes of fun
trauma center: personally thought it was awful
MOH vangaurd: meh, too short, seemed rushed out
monkey ball: not TOO bad
tiger woods: i am 6'4" and really dont want to hit anything around me with my long long arms. same goes for wii sports (there is a reason its free) and there ar so many ports its like COME ON put effort into somthing new, yea Far Cry was fun but let it die!!!
lets not make the Wii=Playskool or something of that nature

Still Playing Wii Sports
May 2, 2007 5:29AM PDT

Every other day... I only got mine 2 months ago though. It's also possible that I just have very very low standards and am easily entertained.

But yeah, I'm enjoying it and I only have the one game. I haven't even used the Virtual Console yet, and that was one of my main reasons to buy the thing.

Anyway, just my take. I do feel that for 'gaming proper', the 360 or PS3 is preferable, but again, it's possible that's just me.

May 3, 2007 5:37AM PDT

I can play a game over and over and over and over and over and over and over again and still not be bored, just because it's fun. Like you, I'm easily entertained. I can turn a lamp on and of and start laughing out of excitement. No, I am not ******** or stupid.
"Is that a typo, or are you really that stupid?"
Shut it, IM Jeeves.

im in the same boat as the rest
May 4, 2007 2:12AM PDT

I traded in 6 Wii games including:
Monkey Ball (I just couldn't get into it)
Elebits (Fun for about 2-3 hours)
Medal Of Honor (Almost beat the whole game in one sitting)
Metal Slug (Beat them all)
SSX Blur (Either love it or hate it, this game was really hard for me)
X-Men (Beat it on regular and difficult setting)

I traded those games in for a DS Lite. I like the RPG genre so I got Final Fantasy III, and Final Fantasy VI. As soon as I beat those I will get Final Fantasy IV, and Final Fantasy V. When will the Wii get an RPG??

When I play my Wii now, I only play madden. It would be great if I could test my madden skills on other players since my Wii is connected to the internet. I might end up getting into the pokemon series just so I can utilize the multiplayer and my new DS Lite. That might sound lame but if its pseudo RPG style then I don't care if it was designed for 10year olds. Plus I'm interested to see how the DS Lite is used as a controller.

I bought it because everybody was talking about it and now I find my self always playing XBOX 360 and waiting for good games to come to the Wii, everybody talks about how bad the library for the PS3 is, but I think is better than Wii's.
But the 360 is better by far.

It met my expectations
May 7, 2007 5:41AM PDT

I didn't really get sucked in by the hype when I bought my Wii, because I wasn't expecting it to be anymore than a upgraded Gamecube with new innovations implemented in it. Right now, I have Legend of Zelda TP, Wario Ware, and Wii Sports, and that's about all I care to play on it right now since nothing else in the Wii game line-up interests me. I'll buy Smash Brothers, Super Mario Galaxy, and probably Mario Party once they come out, but that's about all the games I want for it. I pretty much did the same thing when I got my gamecube considering the only games I ever got for it were RE4 and Advanced Wars (which was horrible IMHO). I've been a fan of Nintendo ever since the original NES, but my faith in the company has seriously deteriorated since the 64 due the all the "kid-friendly" games that Nintendo keeps pumping out. Sure they might have been fun when I was eight and was playing Paperboy on the NES, but I'm not eight anymore. To sum it up, do I regret getting my Wii? No. Will it replace my 360 or my PS3 as my primary console anytime soon or ever? Not a chance.

May 7, 2007 9:46AM PDT

your post really doesnt convince me that you done like kid friendly games. you say you wario ware? if thats not kiddish i guess i need to rethink it. but you say you won't sell your wii. granted niether will i but there are different aspects. i would not sell mine just because im stubborn and i don't care if all i get is smash brothers to top it off. but you dont mention any games that look good to you that are not kiddish. are you looking forward to Res evil?, Disaster:Day of Crysis? or what.
it just didnt make sense to me.

Wrong priorities
May 7, 2007 12:32PM PDT

To me, you shouldn't be spending all this time worrying about how "kiddie" a game is or isn't, and spend more time worrying about is it a fun game to play.

There are plenty of really mature games out there that absolutely fall apart in the gameplay. Sloppy controls, confusing control schemes, uninspired/monotonous battles with either little to no challenge, or extremely difficult... I can still have a lot of fun playing the old SNES Zelda, which has some rather kiddie graphics by the standards of the day. But it's a solid game. Responsive controls, interesting story, excellent execution, loads of replay value, wide variety of scenery, varied tactics for enemies, solid framerate... The combat in Twilight Princess left me wanting... Even Wind Waker, tended to have more satisfying battles, where it was less about button mashing, and more about technique.

My only real concern with games is whether or not they're fun. If that means cheesy cartoon-like graphics, so be it. Zelda: Wind Waker, and Tales of Symphonia were both excellent games for the GameCube, even though they had rather kiddie style graphics. I'd much rather more development time be spent on the game mechanics, with how it looks being a distant second. Otherwise, you get something that's nice to look at, but that's about all. Ideally you have both, but I know which I value more.

May 11, 2007 5:56AM PDT

No I completely agree, it just seems to me that all the Wii games that are kiddish are not fun to me, and I have tried them all (almost). They don?t challenge you or make you involved. They all have one thing in common and that trend seems to be, who can be the cutest game out there?! I wish they would make games that are immersive. I don?t care about the kiddie looks, just the kiddie feel.

Give it time
May 11, 2007 8:05AM PDT

As I already said, Nintendo is targeting the casual gamer and non-gamer much more than it's targeting the hardcore gamers like Sony and Microsoft are with their respective consoles.

Quality games take time to develop. All you can do is just wait. Until then, you can try some of the GameCube back catalog you may have never gotten to. Both Metroid Prime games I can highly recommend. There's Zelda: The Wind Waker, which requires a little perseverance at the beginning, but is every bit deserving of the Zelda title as any other. If you haven't played the Prince of Persia trilogy on another console yet, that's another good series. Tales of Symphonia was most excellent on the RPG front, though it also takes a little patients early on. Eternal Darkness was another gem from the RPG arena. Beyond Good and Evil was like a slightly more grown up Zelda, though way too short. You can also try to get your hands on the Zelda collector's disc, which had the two NES and two N64 Zeldas... Why they left out the best one in the SNES version I cannot fathom. There's also a Master Quest version of the N64's Ocarina of Time Zelda, which is sort of like the second quest in the original NES Zelda, where the locations of things are all jumbled up, and the dungeon layouts are different.

Those should keep you occupied for a couple of months, and you can probably buy them all used on the cheap.

Just got it 2 weeks ago, but I love my Wii
Jun 1, 2007 4:26AM PDT

I kind of gave up on console gaming after the PS1- sure I bought a PS2 and played the hell out of all the GTA games, but nothing else really excited me in the land of consoles and most of my gaming time was taken up by portables after the original Gameboy Advance game out. I'm also apparently one of the few people who really loves the PSP- both for it's multi-media features and for all of the Playstation ports that I've enjoyed playing a lot more on a portable than I ever played on a console.

Anyway, I looked long and hard at the PS3 and the 360 and ended up opting for getting a Wii instead. I've admittedly only had it for 2 weeks now, but I've been playing it a lot. I had the advantage of never having owned a Gamecube, so in addition to getting Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario, I also bought a few old Gamecube games. Haven't played the Mario game much. Have spent most of my time on Wii Sports and Twilight Princess (which is the most fun I've had gaming since I got GTA3 for the PS2).

Games I'm looking forward to on the Wii:
-Resident Evil 4- Wii Edition (sure it's nothing more than a remake of the Gamecube and later PS2 game, but I never played either and since it's only $30, I'm holding out on getting it instead of the Gamecube version).
-Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles ("rail shooter" has me worried a bit, so I'll hold off until after reading the reviews).
-Super Mario Galaxy- waiting like everyone else who owns a Wii.
-The Bigs- MLB arcade-type game- will depend greatly on how well they make use of the Wii controller.
-Manhunt 2- Never played Manhunt 1, but it's a Rockstar game on the Wii.
-No More Heroes- Probably the game I'm looking most forward to seeing.

What about Metroid Prime 3: Corruption? Now THAT game looks fun. Just like Super Smash Bros.: Brawl. And what about that? When I get a Wii, these are two of my must-buys.

So...
Jun 11, 2007 1:43AM PDT

It has been months since I bought a Wii game. I finished Zelda:TP and was left basically with not much else to do. I can only play WiiSports so many times so I am sort of feeling like the Wii has disappointed me.

None of the games that you would think would rock using the Wii (sports games like Tiger Woods especially) have received great reviews since the motion sensing is just not exact enough for most sports games.

Anyone else out there in my boat?

Two consoles
Jun 11, 2007 10:53AM PDT

I've had the Wii since it came out and I still love it. I also have a X360 to play with.

I can understand why people would get frustrated if you only had a Wii ... there's not much out there. The same happended with me when the X360 was out.

In given time, the Wii will have so many games that you won't have enough time to play them...look at the PS2. The way the Wii is selling, developers will be hard pressed not to dedicate more time and titles to the Wii. Remember, the console with the most user base is the console that will have more games.

Casual gamers will be happy with a Wii and only a Wii. We're GAMERS and even if we had the most powerful machin (PS3?), we would still want more. It's our nature. If you only had a X360 or PS3, you would be wanting a Wii.

I totally agree with that statement. What ultimately sold me on the Wii was price, the fact that I don't yet have an HDTV, and well, convincing the wife to let me spend the money (she's more apt to play Mario games than anything on any other system). I still plan on getting a 360 or PS3 some day, but only after I spring for an HDTV and even then the 360 and/or PS3 prices are gonna have to come down a bit.

True
Jun 12, 2007 8:13AM PDT

What the Wii needs is a blockbuster golfing game. Tiger Woods I heard was decent but lacked motion sensing precision to call itself a serious Wii golf game.

The Wii concept should excel in sports games primarily but all the ports from the gamecube so far have been mediocre at best.

Good thing I have Command and Conquer 3 on my 360 to keep me occupied.

Just give it some time people....
Jun 15, 2007 1:46PM PDT

There is one thing that some people need to understand about consoles just after launch. It takes a while for a console to hit its stride. It took the 360 a while before getting some great games. The Wii will have its greats eventually. There is lots to look forward. So for crying out loud GIVE IT SOME TIME!
