Wii DVD playback

Nov 14, 2006 4:59AM PST

What is the deal with Nintendo announcing there will be a version of the Wii released late next year with DVD playback? Isn't that kind of a buzz kill before the initial system is even released? Also I find it super janky that there will be no way according to reports to update the system with firmware from the Wii Shop Channel to add this feature. The only way to get DVD playback from the original Wii is to ditch it and buy a new upgraded one. Pretty lame if you ask me.

it is pretty bad that you will have to get a new Wii next year if you want to have a dvd player in it but really who doesn't already have a dvd player so to me it doesn't really matter I probably would barely use the dvd player in it anyhow so yeah..... Happy

Consoles come with crappy DVD players anyways. I can buy a cheap DVD player that will do just as much for $20-$40. I do not need HD DVDs or Blue Ray discs because 90% of my DVDs are: Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, Futurama, Invader Zim, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and other shows that will not improve with HD format. Not to mention how much it will cost to replace them all with HD discs. So I am quite content with my Nintendo Wii that does not have a DVD player.

i dont really get the announcement either. But then again, i never understood the whole idea to use a gaming console for a DVD player.
